Billie George McKinnerney passed away on Thursday, September 5, 2019 at Shady Shores Nursing Home in San Saba, Texas. Billie George was born May 19, 1925 in Lakeview, Texas, the daughter of William Dudley and Georgia Brown Page.

She had to walk about a mile through fields and pastures to the one room school house known as Lakeview. There was no town, but just a dirt cross roads. The story is that when she came to the fence between the Page farm and the McKinnerney farm, she would stop and bawl. Mrs. McKinnerney would send one of her 10 kids across the field to take Billie the rest of the way to school. After a time, it became the job of John Duevon McKinnerney to fetch her and take her to school. It must have been destiny because on May 12, 1943, she and John D. were married.

After military service, John and Billie George bought a small farm in the Bethel community. In 1962, they bought the Richland Springs Locker Plant and ran that for 20 years.

In retirement, Billie George’s passion was quilting. Known locally as "The Quilter," she made over 250 hand stitched quilts during the next 30 years, winning many blue ribbons at local and regional fairs. Billie George donated quilts to the high school football team and the local Volunteer Fire Department. These quilts were auctioned off and the bidding quite spirited as they were so valued by the locals.

Always a community supporter, Billie George prepared food for many families after a funeral, and frequently made sandwiches for the Richland Springs football team bus trips.

Billie George is survived by her children: Gayland and wife, Chris, of Fairhope, AL; daughter, Judy, and husband, Tom Womack, of San Angelo; and son, Dale, and wife, Terry, of Richland Springs. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren: John and Ann McKinnerney of Austin; Stephanie McKinnerney of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands; Devon and wife, Crystal McKinnerney, of Normal, IL; Teresa and Marc LaBate of Austin; Meloni Schneider of San Angelo; Tres and Jennifer Womack of Craig, CO; Amy and Derek Boscamp of Brownwood; Tim and Brita Womack of Santa Barbara, CA; Drew and Tara Womack of Austin; Wendy and Marco Quesada of Round Rock; Michael and Jennifer McKinnerney of Richland Springs; and Christi and Todd Burks of Brownwood. She is also survived by nine greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her sister, Bonnie Page.

Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Adams Cemetery, 205 South Brown Street, Richland Springs, Texas 76871.
