“Well she said if she told none of them would be safe and she would not tell me until I promised her I would not tell what she said nor force her to tell the grand jury what she knew.

On this promise she told me and I never compelled her to tell it to the grand jury.” George Anderson testified the night Turner and old man Daugherty were ordered to leave, a crowd of men passed his house on horseback, and he recognized one of them as Matt Ford.

Cross-examined, witness said it was about 9 or 10 o’clock at night.

He was on the gallery, and the men were off about forty yards, riding two by two.

“I could not tell their features or color of their clothes.”
