Alvin (Al) L. Carhart, Jr., age 79. Born in East Orange, New Jersey to Alvin L. Carhart, Sr. and Eleanor Gehle Carhart. After graduating from the University of Miami, he served as a Medic in the U.S. Army 3rd Armored Division (Spearhead), stationed in Frankfurt, Germany. Prior to being deployed for duty in Europe, Alvin was sent to Fort Hood, Texas for special training. It was there that he met his future wife, Ruth Stratton at the University of Mary Hardin Baylor in Belton, Texas. They were married several months later in Germany. After his service in the 3rd Armored Division, he returned to civilian life in New Jersey. He worked on Wall Street for J.P. Morgan Trust in New York City. From there he and his family moved to Miami, Florida, where he worked for the First National Bank of Miami as a Trust Officer. Several years later, he and his family moved to Southern California, where he continued to work in the financial field and movie/entertainment industry. Alvin enjoyed watching all sports, board and body surfing the beaches on both coasts, skiing, golfing, handball, tennis, swimming, fishing and shelling off of Captiva and Sanibel Islands, Florida, gourmet cooking, traveling and camping, especially in the mountains, pets (many were strays that he would rescue and bring home), jazz enthusiast, the desert wildlife and Las Vegas. Alvin is survived by his loving wife, Ruth; daughter, Lynn Torres (son-in-law Matthew); son, Leigh and granddaughter, Rachel Schmidt. He was preceded in death by his son, Lorin, in 1988. His children and grandchild reside in southern California. Alvin is also survived by cousins, Charles R. Barth and Gerry Gadgett (Oklahoma); Janet and Dave Thomson (Florida), Fred and Jane Gehle (Georgia), Pat Carhart (New Jersey), Sharon Cobb (Pennsylvania), Michele Malinchak (New Jersey), Marilyn and Jack Fielder (New Jersey), Gil and Joan Gehle (Colorado), and his Aunt, Mrs. Jean Carhart (New Jersey). Alvin and his wife, Ruth, divided their time between homes in Old Bethel, San Saba County, Texas and Ruidoso, New Mexico, where he passed away September 5, 2013 after losing a two year battle with cancer with Ruth by his side.
