Cruz Corona, 98, of Goldthwaite, passed away Thursday, January 16, 2014, in Temple, and in the company of his wife of 68 years and other family members. Cruz was born on July 16, 1915, was a lifetime resident of Goldthwaite. He was instrumental in establishing St. Peters Catholic Church in Goldthwaite where he was a lifetime member. Cruz is preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers, and 4 sisters. Survivors include his wife, Ramona Corona; one child, Mary Ann Piper of Venus, TX; one brother, Nick Corona and wife Janie of Goldthwaite; one sister-in-law, Virginia Coronado and her husband Herminio; and numerous nephews & nieces. Cruz was a World War II veteran & proudly served his country in the U S Army. He fought in the Philippines' battles of Ryukyus and Okinawa. He was a member of Infantry Rifle Squad Company A, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 7th Division, in the SW Pacific Theater of Operations. For his military service, he received the Purple Heart with an Oak Leaf Cluster, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, The World War II Victory Medal, The American Theater Service Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Upon his return to Mills County, he owned & operated a sheep shearing business providing a valuable service to area ranchers. He was also a school bus driver employed by the Goldthwaite ISD, a position he thoroughly enjoyed for many years. Family & friends will always remember Cruz for his wit and sense of humor, and his desire to make you laugh and smile. He loved the sport of tennis and enjoyed entertaining us with his violin. He was a friend to all who knew him. A rosary service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 24th, and a memorial service at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 25th. Both services will be held at St Peters Catholic Church in Goldthwaite
