Wayburn Lee "Chief" Perkins of Gatesville, Texas passed away Thursday, November 14, 2013, at his home. A memorial service was held on Sunday, November 17, 2013 at Coryell Community Church. Chief was born in E vant, Texas on July 28, 1938 and attended Evant High School. He married Johnnie Mae Gatliff on August 31,1983. He was employed by Chicago Bridge and Iron for 26 years, until he retired in 2001. He continued to weld for  the public in his private shop up until the onset of his illness in June of this year. Chief is survived by his wife Johnnie and four daughters; Beverly & Scott Marwitz of Evant, Selena and Tim Higginbotham of Goldthwaite, Gay McCarty of Gatesville, and Shirl Rae and Lee Shineldecker of Lometa. "Poppa Chief" was loved by grandsons James Lee Freeman, Jason Higginbotham, Garrett Baize, Jonathan Wills and Chase Yarborough;   granddaughters Angela Freeman Torres, Jennifer Higginbotham Harland, and Sara McCarty Redding; great-grandsons Matt Freeman, Garren Higginbotham, Seth Baize, Wesley Wills, Jack Yarborough; great-randdaughters Ellie Freeman, Bailey Briseno, Jayme Wills, and Kate Yarborough. He will be missed by countless other family members and friends, many of whom Chief thought of as family.  Chief is preceded in death by his parents, Dewey and Zona Perkins; sisters Barbara Kirkland and Carolyn Smith; brother Bobby Casey and daughters Cindy and Karen. Chief instilled many young people with his knowledge of skills and hard work ethics. He touched the lives of many with his trademark sense of humor which he maintained to the end.
