Receipts totaled 4666 head for the week. The market was active with most all calves and yearlings trending higher. The stocker steers sold steady and the stocker heifers sold steady to 2.00 higher with 1 set of 9 heifers 423 lbs at 160.00. The feeder steers in the 600-700 lb range sold 2.00-3.00 higher with 1 group of 23 steers weighing 660 lbs bringing 149.50.

Receipts totaled 1734 head for the week. Demand was good on all classes with the stocker steers and heifers selling steady to $1.00 higher as the wheat field demand continues to grow each week with a set of 8 steers weighing 533 lbs at 163.00. Feeder steers and heifers also sold on a steady market with one set of 7 steers weighing 634 lbs at 146.00.

The Board of Directors of Operation Orphans, Inc. has selected four dates for doe hunts during the forthcoming whitetail season. They are the following Saturdays: October 27th, November 17th, December 1st and January 12, 2013. The October date will be an all girls' hunt, while the remaining dates will be all boys' hunts.This is the 52nd year of the "Take a Child Hunting"

There were some doubts from some folks around the County as to the fact of our being in another drought season, but I’ve heard from the “Horses’” mouth that we should have El Nino coming back to our country about mid October. If you would like to know my reliable source, it comes from the Meteorology Department down at Texas A&M University.

Receipts totaled 2077 on Thursday with no sale being held in Mason on Monday due to the Labor Day Holiday. The tone on Thursday was very strong on a choice offering of calves and yearlings along with a large number of weaned cattle which were in high demand. The stocker steers and heifers sold steady to $2.00 higher after last week’s $15.00-$20.00 increase.

Oops, We Did It AgainA Red River County game Warden and two Bowie County game wardens received information about a possible road hunting incident near a residence. The property owner and his wife were outside at the time and after hearing shots, the husband, who had been drinking, jumped into his vehicle and began to chase the hunters.

Receipts totaled 5361 head for the week with the market higher on all classes of cattle. Stocker steers and heifers were $5.00 higher with the 300-400 pound steers $20.00 higher and the same weight heifers $15.00 higher. The bigger feeder steers were $2.00 higher and heifers were $3.00 higher. Packer cows were $3.00 higher and packer bulls were $2.00 higher.

San Saba Young Farmers will be hosting their Youth Rodeo on August 24th and 25th at 7:00 p.m. at the San Saba Rodeo Arena. This year two new events will be held that are sure to be crowed pleasers.Mutton Bustin will be held on Saturday, the 25th for ages 8 and under Wild Shetland Bare-Back Riding will be held both nights with buckles being awarded for Best Ride and Worst Wreck in both events.All of the other events that we have all come to enjoy will also be held.

Reasons for rain might come in many colors. Lots of folks around our parts speak of the weather nearly all the time, but the most oft mentioned aspect would be whether or not we might be getting another rain or of how dry it is. Late last week I happened to be visiting with Olan Tisdale down at Stafford’s and he parted, saying that he hoped I would be writing this edition listing how much rain some of the folks around the County had measured over the weekend.
