I visited with him last night, but that may be the last time I ever see him alive. Last summer he developed a cough and went to the doctor, and was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer. He is over 6 feet tall, young, strong and in good physical shape. He works with wood and has made a lot of crosses for different churches.

Is 2013 almost over yet? What, we aren’t even out of the first month? Oh gosh, I better look for some Teflon because the skin I am in is not going to cut it at the rate I am going. As you guys know, I have had more than my share of sorrows, hurts and obstacles in my long life and through them all I have managed to keep a smile in my heart, a hug in my arms for the world and humor in my senses but come on now, isn’t sixty one years a bit long for a streak to continue?

I recently received an email from readers in Germany. It seems our little column is read over the internet throughout the world. Armand wrote that he was so glad the column would continue. He also sends condolences from his family to the Cummings family. Armand and his wife, Nancy, bought Irene and Jesse’s place on Highway 765.

From all the weather reports this area should be getting some rain, let us hope it is really going to happen. It is amazing how much green has shown up since the last rain and this past week of warm weather has really helped. Some have already started to plow up their garden spots to start getting ready to plant the cold weather plants, but just know old man winter is still with us for a while longer. Bonnie Millican reported that she and Pat spent January 18-20, with Geoff, Lindsay and Henr ...

Six ways to instill the love of the wild in a child. It’s a profound yet simple statement: Kids belong outside. Something deeper than appreciating flora and fauna connects kids with outside playtime. A litany of scientific studies proves what many Texas parents know instinctively — there is lasting physical and cognitive value in turning off electronic entertainment and venturing outdoors. Growing up in the late 1960s and ’70s, I spent most of my free time in the wild.

If you are anywhere near my age, you remember Instamatic and Polaroid cameras. Both required supplies—film cartridges and flashcubes for the Instamatic, and the packs of self-developing photos for the Polaroid.
