Joyce McCown age 74 of Cherokee, Texas, passed away September 12, 2021, at her home in Cherokee, Texas. Joyce was born in Elgin, Texas, on May 30, 1947, to O. D. Clopton and Mable Dean (Hurst).

As a young girl, Joyce worked with her family in cotton fields or caring for younger siblings and cousins. When she was 17 years old, she eloped and had her picture on the news as missing. Joyce was married on July 10, 1964 in Laredo, Texas, to Roy C. McCown. Roy ended up being her parents most dependable and devoted son-in-law. Joyce spent most of her life as a mom and housewife. She loved her family dearly. She took great care raising her own children and looking after her numerous nieces and nephews. She was also a loving grandmother letting her grandchildren know every moment she could how much she loved them. Joyce never met a stranger and loved the Lord. She was a member of Cherokee’s First Baptist Church and was generous to all who knew her.

Those left behind to cherish her memory are her children: two sons, Tommy McCown and Roy McCown, Jr. and wife Carol of Eastland, Texas; one daughter, Judy Carlisle and husband Jason of Brownwood, Texas; one brother, Kelly Clopton and wife Joyce of Elgin, Texas; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Roy McCown, one son, LeRoy McCown; one brother, Paul Clopton; and two sisters, Melody Stewart and Lita Clopton.

A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, September 16, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. at Cherokee’s First Baptist Church. Interment to follow at Kuykendall Cemetery in Cherokee, Texas. Blaylock Funeral Home of San Saba in charge of arrangements.
