On the morning of March 20, 2020, the City of San Saba lost its major grocery store to a tragic fire. The facility was a total loss, and the city was without a grocery store.
Roger Lowe and his store team arrived that morning to assess the damage of the fire and to see what was available in town to place a temporary store to serve the needs of the city until the store could be reconstructed.
As you all remember, we were three weeks into the COVID pandemic, and the world and San Saba was shook up with not only a health crisis but also a food crisis.
A group of city officials, Ken Jordan, Scott Glaze, Mike Wadsworth, the late Stan Weik, County Judge, Sheriff's Department and numerous other officials met with Roger Lowe and discussed Lowe's intention to get a full-functioning store as soon as possible.
What all of the City officials realized shortly after was that Lowe's was moving "very fast."
After an assessment of all the available buildings in town, Albert Stowell and wife stepped up and offered a building on the Courthouse square. Out of this meeting, the Lowe's temporary store was born. The Stowell's were very easy to work with. In fact, the agreement was made over the phone at 5 p.m. that same evening.
Mayor Ken Jordan and all of his City officials said we must get this done, and a "Store Was Born." In seven days (five work days, two planning days), Lowe's opened its door with a full-service supermarket including fresh cut meat, fresh produce, dairy, frozen foods and a broad selection of grocery and general merchandise. Teams of Lowe's Construction, electricians, City workers, and Lowe's store team members worked tirelessly 24 hours a day, and the store reopened March 27th. Fast Forward 18 months, Lowe's opened its Star of the Art Full-Size Supermarket. Lowe's management is excited to open our beautiful new store and want to thank the citizens of San Saba for being patient and supporting us through this endeavor.
