The Abilene Chamber of Commerce, in cooperation with the Texas AgriLife Extension Service - Taylor County, will hold the 2010 Texas Farm – Ranch – Wildlife Expo, sponsored by Dodge, on Tuesday, February 23rd from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Wednesday, February 24th from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the Taylor County Expo Center, Abilene, Texas. The following are excerpts from recent Texas Parks and Wildlife Department law enforcement reports
Throwing the book at them: On Oct. 10, a Jack County game warden and a Wise County game warden apprehended three subjects at a deer camp for possession of marijuana, hunting deer by illegal means and methods (rifle during archery-only season), failure to tag, two counts of failing to maintain in edible condition, no archery stamp, no hunter education, hunting in closed season and possession of a stolen ATV.
It would be safe to say that most of the intros. to "Highlights" the past several weeks have probably been relating to aspects of the weather, being cold, wet, or both. This is by no means to be construed as carping or complaining, being that we all enjoy rains & the winters can be somewhat cold at times, even in Texas.

Receipts totaled 1254 head. The market was very active and strong on calves and yearlings with good condition. Stocker heifers were $2 to $3 higher while stocker steers sold $2 higher. Feeder heifers were selling $2 to $3 higher and feeder steers sold $2 higher. Packer cows were selling $4 to $5 higher while packer bulls sold $2 higher. We know that it is might near impossible to be able to pen one of these columns without bringing up the weather. Most city folks don’t know it, but we are all extremely dependant upon the weather and those of us involved in Agriculture and other outside activities stay pretty well aware of it.

Receipts totaled 4285 head for the week. The market was strong and very active with stocker heifers selling $3 to $5 higher and heifers with good condition selling $10 higher. Stocker steers sold $3 to $5 higher. Feeder steers were selling $2 to $3 higher while feeder heifers sold $1 higher.

Receipts totaled 3101 head for the week. The market was strong and demand good. After last week’s strong advance of the market, the stocker steers sold steady and the stocker heifers were $2 to $4 higher. Feeder steers and heifers were steady. Packer cows were $1 higher and bulls were $2 higher. Mason - San Saba January 14, 2010
Receipts totaled 4350 head for the week. The market was active and demand good on a choice offering of cattle. Stocker steers and heifers all sold $2 to $3 higher. Feeder steers sold $3 to $5 higher and heifers were $3 higher. The weaned calves sold mostly $6 to $10 higher on the 650 lb.
Texas AgriLife Extension Service Sheep and Goat Specialist, Dr. Frank Craddock, will present a general sheep and goat program on Tuesday January 26th at 2:00 p.m. at Rylander Library. Dr. Craddock will discuss facilities required and flock health concerns as well as the different hair sheep breeds and their attributes. Many landowners in San Saba County have small sheep and goat flocks on their property.

Brandon, 9 years old, could hardly contain his excitement when he was told he would be able to use the 30-30 Winchester his Papaw, Rick Pierce took his first deer with.
