It’s a fairly sure bet that the milder temperatures have been welcomed with warming smiles the past few days. If you have happened to have been traveling any of the gravel roads around the County or out in the pastures, we’ll agree that the damp, drizzly days have kept the countryside pretty wet, though.

Receipts totaled 6066 head for the week on a choice offering of calves and yearlings. The market continued to advance higher with stocker steers selling $5 to $8 higher and stocker heifers bringing $5 to $10 higher. Feeder steers and heifers sold $3 to $5 higher. Hunting has become a vital part of San Saba County's economy. Businesses, as well as landowners profit. If predators are not controlled, they can and will cause a decline in the availability of wildlife. Therefore it's important to keep the predator population in check in order to continue to attract hunters to our county. The Association again sponsored a predator contest this past year.

It’s probably a pretty sure bet that each time you start reading "Highlights" the past couple of months, the lead sentence and paragraph seem to begin with the same news; more winter than normal and plenty wet weather. Though we find it difficult to fuss about the rain, most folks we visit with are just about ready for some spring weather, Bluebonnets, and fishing time.
Operation Orphans, Inc. will celebrate 50 years of the "Take a child Hunting" program, March 13, 2010 from 1:00 - 6:00 p.m. at Camp Gene Ashby. The celebration will be an open house format where guests may view the facilities, hear guest speakers, enjoy refreshments, and visit with Operation Orphans directors, host ranchers, participating children's home representatives, guides, and volunteers.

For those of you that have been pining for spring, it appears that one might just have to exercise a bit of patience and wait a while. Fact of the matter is that as I’m penning the rest of "High lights" Tues. a.m., things are looking rather bright white around our Fair Valley of the Pecan.

Feeder heifers sold $2 higher while feeder steers were steady. Packer cows and bulls sold $2 higher in an active market. Stocker cows and pairs sold $50-$75 higher.

It looks like we’ve gotten the Ground hog out of the way as well as the lil’ Cupid fellow that makes us buy flowers, cards, & candy, and all the memorable Presidents as well. We are most certainly still serving our term of winter, and lots of places in the pastures are still too treacherous to transverse.
