San Saba High School, Richland Springs High School, and Cherokee High School all competed on April 29-30 at their respective regional track and field meet. San Saba was down at Javelina Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M University-Kingsville for 2A Region 4, while both Richland Springs and Cherokee headed to Whitney High School for the 1A Region 3 meet.
San Saba Dillos And Lady Dillos
Although San Saba was unable to qualify any athletes for the upcoming 2A state championship meet, the Dillos and Lady Dillos capped off a superb 2022 track and field season in Kingsville at the regional meet.

Wesley Lackey placed sixth in the 100-meter dash with a mark of 11.60 seconds. The Dillos’ foursome of Mejia, Lackey, senior Franco Franco, and sophomore Ethan Gonzales qualified for the 4x200-meter relay final and had the eight-best time with a mark of 1:35.24.
The Lady Dillos had the foursome of senior Landri Glover, junior Lexy Amthor, junior Leslie Aguirre, and sophomore Macy Sebastain enter the regional meet in the girls’ 4x100-meter relay and finish 15th in the prelims with a time of 54.70 seconds. Glover also competed in the girls’ triple jump finals as her final flight of 32’2.75” was good enough for ninth place out of 16 entrants for the event.
Richland Springs Coyotes And Lady Coyotes
Richland Springs qualified several outstanding studentathletes for the upcoming 1A state championship meet in their respective events.
The Coyotes had the boys’ 4x100-meter relay foursome of Zeke Hoevers, Nick Nilson, Jadeyn Bryant, and Zane Capps was outstanding as they earned gold with a great time of 45.29 seconds. Jadeyn Bryant was also the champion in the boys’ 300-meter hurdles event as his mark of 40.77 seconds was more than 1.5 seconds faster than the runner-up from Covington High School.
As for the Lady Coyotes, the girls' 4x200-meter relay foursome of Raegan Wright, Madison Thurmon, Lili Appleton, and Ryleigh Bryant also advanced to state as their time of 1:52.66 placed them as a close runner-up behind first-place Blum High School. Ryleigh Bryant was also the regional champion in the girls’ 300-meter hurdles with a time of 47.61 seconds and qualified for state with a silver medal in the 100-meter dash with a solid mark of 13.12 seconds.
Cherokee Indians And Lady Indians
Cherokee also had several great student-athletes at regionals who were able to qualify for the upcoming 1A state championship meet.
The Indians had the boys’ 4x200-meter relay foursome of Gunner Baugh, Caleob Houston, Rode Ligon, and Joseph Bond qualify for state with a silver medal as the group ran a time of 1:35.60 that was less than a second behind the winners from Gorman High School.
Joseph Bond was also outstanding in the two field events he entered as the champion of both the discus (162’8”) and the shot put (52’6”) to earn individual gold medals.
As for the Lady Indians, they had two individual athletes each win silver medals in their respective events. Brissa Baugh qualified for state in the high jump as her top flight of 4’8” was good enough for second place, while Sydnie Bond was also the runner-up in the girls’ 300-meter hurdles with a mark of 48.28 seconds. Although the Cherokee girls just missed qualifying for state in the 4x200-meter relay, the foursome of Baugh, Bond, Maycie Shanklin, and Lauren Roberson did very well and placed third with a time of 1:54.24.
Richland Springs and Cherokee athletes will both take part on Saturday, May 14, at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas-Austin. Go online to the official UIL website for all track and field event start times.
