The San Saba community is getting ready for another Thanksgiving Dinner on Thursday, November 27th at The Father's House. Last year around 650 people were served Thanksgiving Dinner. John Northern and his family began this project for the community years ago. Joe and Naomi Ragsdale are in charge of getting volunteers to work, serve, deliver and provide pies. Although the Extension Club ladies and San Saba County 4-H members are contributing home made pies this year, more pies are needed. |

The San Saba County Commissioners Court met at 9 a.m. Monday, November 10th in the County Judge’s Chambers. Judge Byron Theodosis called the meeting to order and Ricky Lusty gave the invocation followed by everyone joining for the pledges of allegiance to the American and Texas flags. Judge Theodosis reported that the funding for the restoration of the Court house has “backed off” because of the economy. |

The 2008 Pecan Food show will be Friday morning, Dec 5th at the San Saba County courthouse This year, the Grand Champion in each division; Club, Non Club, and Youth will take home $100.00. The Reserve Champions will receive $50.00. There will also be a prize for the first place winner in each category. |

The San Saba County Chamber of Commerce held a drawing for a rifle November 1st. The winner was R. D. Williamson of San Saba. He is pictured with his son J.D. Williamson and the President of the Chamber, Patsy Kirk. The Chamber would like to thank George and Dina Tolar of Stafford Hardware for ordering this gun for the raffle and to all who participated in the raffle. |

The San Saba County Pecan Show has been set for December 1st and 2nd by the Pecan Growers Committee. Entries MUST be in the Extension office no later than Wednesday afternoon November 26th. You can bring your entries any time. The earlier the better. Processing will begin at 1 p.m. |

Air Force Airman Alisha N. Slone has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations. In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. She is the daughter of Mike Slone of Richland Springs, Texas, and Sherron Baker of Brady, Texas. Slone is a 2005 graduate of Rochelle High School, Texas. |

Gabriel, Dee Dee and Keira Jane Hernandez welcomed home Eli Hernandez, born on October 13, 2008 at 4:17 p.m. Eli was born at St. David’s Hospital in Austin, Texas and weighed 8 pounds 5 ounces and was 20 1/2 inches long. Proud grandparents are Ginger Epperson of Cherokee, Junior and Suzana Hernandez of San Saba, and Mike and Jo Reavis of Colorado. |

The San Saba Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a Christmas Outdoor Lighting Home Decorating Contest. This event will be judged the evening of December 5, 2008. Cash prizes to be awarded are $100.00 for first place, $50.00 for second, and $25.00 for third. In addition, the Chamber encourages all business owners to decorate for Christmas this year. |

An interesting and informative article about Millican Pecan Company, their pies, candy, shelled pecans, etc., and their new product pecan butter made the same way peanut butter is made. A former San Saba resident has been promoted to associate director for Texas Tech University’s Department of Student Media in Lubbock. Sheri Westerfeld Lewis assumed her new title on Sept. 1, moving up from the position of assistant director. As associate director, Lewis is charged with aiding in the operation of Student Media, which oversees the student newspaper, The Daily Toreador; the yearbook, La Ventana; and the 35,000-watt student-run radio station, KTXT-FM. |

Mr. and Mrs. Carl (Pete) Hamrick, Jr. of Belton celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary on Sunday, October 26, 2008 with family and friends in attendance. Pete Hamrick and Natalie Gage were married in San Angelo, TX, on October 28, 1948. They lived in San Saba County for the first 55 years of marriage and moved to Belton five years ago to be near their daughters. |

Brother Walker was born in San Saba County January 12, 1924. He attended San Saba High School and was a veteran of the United States Navy. |

In the only contested race in San Saba County, Allen Brown was elected Sheriff/Tax Assessor Collector in the General Election held November 4th. When asked, Brown stated he was thankful for all the support and prayers he received and was looking forward to the new challenges ahead. |

Joining them were Tracy’s sister April Quade from Leander, cousin Yoki Riggs of Algerita and family friend Donnie Lord of Dripping Springs. They walked in honor of Tracy. April and Yoki also walked in memory of classmate and friend, Shelli Dempsey. |

It is estimated that falling asleep while driving is responsible for at least 100,000 automobile crashes, 71,000 injuries, and 1,500 fatalities. A 2006 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration study showed that drowsiness is a significant problem that can make drivers four times more likely to be in a crash or near-crash. While drowsy driving is a problem that can affect all drivers, the problem is most prevalent among young drivers, shift workers, and those who work long hours. |

It was good to see Jamie and Cindy Gray in Cherokee last week end. Some of their family and frends were here also, some of them went camping and hunting out on the Gray ranch. A group from the McArthur Church of Christ came to services in Cherokee Sunday at the Church of Christ and spent some time with the children at Cherokee Home for Children. Robert Baugh spent last week end hunting in San Angelo. Danny Duggan and Larry Windham went to Sweetwater to visit with Xazier Monron. |

It has been a month now since we had our last 2.5 inches of rain. We are seriously in need of moisture. Robert Williams, of the Dallas area, visited with Bonnie and Junior Evans one day last week. He was our pastor at Elm Grove many years ago. He was a Howard Payne student at the time and ours was his first church to pastor. |

Such said sayings as: “All good things in time , will come.”, Winston Churchill said “Patience is sorrow’s salve.”; while Shakespeare wrote, “He that must make a cake out of Wheat, must also tarry the grinding.” The most amusing one ever heard was in reference to the person that was praying for patience, but followed up with saying that he wanted it “right now”. |

Receipts totaled 3931 head for the week. The market was very active and demand strong on all classes of weaned and non weaned cattle. Stocker steers sold $5 higher and stocker heifers sold $3 higher. The San Saba Ladies Golf Association met November 6, 2008 for the monthly business meeting with the President, Anita Miles, calling the meeting to order and opening with prayer by the Club Chaplain, Nell McHorse. The Secretary, Hattie Rogers, read the minutes and they were approved as read. Our Treasurer, Bobby Churchill, is at home recovering from surgery; therefore, we didn’t have a financial report. |

By the time you read this the biggest part of November will be gone and before you know it turkey day and then poof Christmas will be upon us. Where does all the time go? The older you get the faster the months and years go by. When you are a youngster you think the time passes very slow, and the holidays will never get here, but just you wait! The frost that came this last week did get some of the leaves on the pecan trees, but still have some that are green and hanging on, and the mesquites have not lost their leaves as of yet. |

I notice them more in Airports either unloading from airplanes coming from the battle front or waiting to board airplanes going back to the battle front. They do not make much noise or draw much attention to themselves. The little pieces of metal or ribbons on their uniforms will tell you a lot about the solider and where he has been or what he has done. |

Arlena was born October 16, 1918 in San Saba County, the daughter of Walter Eckert and Jane Nolan Eckert. She graduated from Richland Springs High School in 1936. Arlena is survived by two grandsons, Mark Linn and his wife Louise, of Adelaide, SA. |

Frank C. “Bubba” Walker, 84, of Victoria, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008. He was born on Jan. 12, 1924, in San Saba, to Valley Woods and George B. Walker. After graduating from San Saba High School in 1942, Bubba served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the USS Guadalupe AO-32, earning the rank of storekeeper second class. |

Jack R. Turner joined wife Wanda in the heavenly kingdom. He faced his bout with cancer as he did all things in his life and that was head on with a positive attitude. Unfortunately on November 7, 2008 he lost the battle with cancer. Jack worked at University of Texas Automotive Department as Supervisor before his retirement. |

San Saba 8th Grade Dillos finished off the 2008 season with a 20-14 win over the Coleman 8th Grade Bluecats in Coleman. The win finished off the season with 6 wins, 2 losses, and 1 tie. The 8th Dillos fell short of the District Title by 1 point with last weeks 7-6 loss to Comanche. |

The Coleman Bluecats defeated the San Saba Armadillos last Friday night at Hufford Field in Coleman keeping their slim playoff hopes alive. Coleman needed a victory and a loss by Early to make the playoffs. A large contingent from Comanche was in attendance supporting the Dillos. A San Saba win would have put the Indians in the playoffs. |

The Texas Wildlife Association Foundation (TWAF) and the San Antonio Livestock Exposition, Inc. (SALE) have awarded four $10,000 Natural Resource-Excellence in Education Scholarships to four deserving Texas youth. The scholarships were awarded to four freshmen at Texas universities who are majoring in natural resource related field such as agricultural science, wildlife science, forestry, range science, etc. Scholarships were awarded to Sarah Coffey of New Braunfels (Texas A&M University); Brenda Gibson of Bend (Tarleton State University); Josh Watson of Jayton (Angelo State University); and Annie Wolf of Byers (Texas Tech University). |

The Cherokee Indians saw their hopes for a playoff bid vanish as the Panther Creek Panthers outlasted them last Friday night. PC was able to keep fresh legs on the field and wore the Indians down in the 4th quarter. The Indians finished the season with a 6-4 record. The Indians scored first on a 50 yard run by Tucker Corsi. |

The San Saba Lady Dillos kicked off the 08-09 campaign last Monday in Burnet as they scrimmaged Burnet and Belton. We did some good things for our first scrimmage. We shot the ball really well and scrambled around in our jump defense. We still need to shore up some things for our first game but for our first scrimmage I was pleased. |

This past Saturday, November 8,2008, the regional cross country meet was ran at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock. Mae Simmons is a hard, but fast course. The weather was pleasant with very little wind. San Saba’s representatives did a very good job as Danessa Vasquez came in 14th, four places out of a trip to state. |

3rd/4th Grade Division Hot Shots 15, Shooting Angels 6 Dynasty Saldivar scored 7 points, Abigail Ingram 2 points, RayleePannell added 1 point and Brooke Nagle also added some good defensiveplay to lead the Hot Shots past the Shooting Angels. Hannah Hibler (5 points), Hallie Taylor (1 point), Jaycie Johnson,Bailie Santeufemia all played well offensively while Megan Sanchez,Hanna Osbourn and Cheyenne Maldonado played good defense for theShooting Angels. We have GREAT kids here at San Saba ISD. I am continually amazed by their polite attitudes, their willingness to work hard, and the respect they give their teachers. As I travel to different school events, participate in regional and state opportunities, I see and hear first hand about the difficulties schools are having with students. |

The Red Ribbons we wear during this time are a symbol of unity against the illegal use of drugs. This public display began in response to the kidnapping and murder of Federal Drug Enforcement Agent, Enrique Camarena in 1985 while he was investigating drug traffickers. In response to his death, angered parents across the country began wearing red ribbons to take a stand against the illegal use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs and to show their support for drug-free youth. |
