Community News

Chief Justice Ken Law of the Texas Court of Appeals, Third District, will speak to the San Saba Property Owners Association at its October 28, 2008 Meeting. The Meeting will be held at 7:00 PM in the Senior Center on the corner of S. Water and E. Storey Streets. All citizens and students are invited to attend. Chief Justice Law presides over the Texas appellate court with civil and criminal jurisdiction for 24 Texas Counties including San Saba.

The San Saba County Commissioners Court held a regular meeting on Tuesday, October 14 in the County Judge’s Chambers. Judge Byron Theodosis called the meeting to order and Ricky Lusty gave the invocation followed by the pledges to the American and Texas flags. The Commissioners Court Meetings minutes for September 8,15,19 and 25 were approved. County Clerk Kim Wells reported that there has been over 100 mail out ballots at this time.

The City Council of San Saba, Texas held their regular meeting on Tuesday, October 14th at 6:00 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers. Mayor Ken Jordan called the meeting to order followed by Martha Leigh Whitten giving the invocation and everyone joining for the pledges to the American and Texas flags. A presentation was made by James Jones, Fire Chief of the San Saba Volunteer Fire Department.

San Saba County 4-H’s 1st ever Ranch Rodeo held October 11th at the Rodeo Arena was a big success. Ten teams participated with two teams, The Llano Cowboy Cleaners and G&R Cattle, tying for 1st place. The Llano Cowboys Cleaners was composed of Ben Henniger, Ricky Morgan, Ralston Hooten and Wade Walden while G&R Cattle team included Reagen Maxcey, Codey Munden, Ben Blackburn, and Morgan Gilger.

San Saba City Police Officer Allen Brown continues to lend his free time to the youth. It was encouraging to hear Officer Brown share some of his own trials with 49 students in Cherokee recently. The First Baptist Youth were able to relate with Officer Brown on a level playing field.

Army Pvt. Shan D. Hawkins has graduated from the Infantryman One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. The training consists of Basic Infantry Training and Advanced Individual Training. During the nine weeks of basic combat training, the soldier received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons employment, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid skills, and Army history, core values and traditions.

The Texas Colorado River Floodplain Coalition will hold the second in a series of public meetings as part of the Coalition's ongoing efforts to update the 2004 hazard Mitigation Plan. The purpose of the open meeting is to update the community on progress in developing the plan and to solicit information that can help the project team in identifying and analyzing hazards affecting residents of the participating jurisdictions and in recommending possible actions that can be taken to reduce the impact of those hazards. The meeting will be held November 10th from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m.

The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the San Saba County Soil and Water Conservation District invite the public and any agencies with an interest in conservation issues to participate in a Local Work Group meeting to be held at the USDA Service Center in San Saba. This meeting will be on October 28, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. The purpose of this meeting is to receive input from a broad range of local agencies, organizations, businesses, and individuals that have an interest in natural resource conditions and needs in San Saba County. Input received will allow the Local Work Group to make recommendations on resource concerns to be addressed for county-based funding.

The Mason Country Opry will be held on Tuesday, October 28, at the Odeon Theater in downtown Mason. Admission is $8.00 per person and tickets will be available at the door. Local Country Music entertainer Tommy Kent will headline the monthly show. Kent has been singing Country and Gospel music for many years.

The Pierian Study Club met October 9, 2008 at the home of Susie Nettleship. The members were served pecan pie, cranberry nut bread and coffee. Hostesses were Susie Nettleship, Nancy Oliver, Gail Bruner, Zolly Jones, Kynda Jordan, and Sandy Smith. President Patricia Warren called the meeting to order. Kathleen Hawkins introduced the speaker, Maude Ann Kuykendall.

The Wallace Creek EE Club and the Live Oak EE Club met together at the Wallace Creek clubhouse on Thursday, October 16, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. Lynn Blankenship called the meeting to order. The group said the TEEA Creed. Roll call was answered to "What was your favorite Halloween Costume." Doris Cates read the minutes of the September meeting.

The Fall Festival last Saturday was a great sucess. It was like a Homecoming. Hopefully they will plan on having it again next year. Jerri Smith, daughter-in-law of the late S.L. and Noble Lee Smith will be laid to rest at the Cherokee Cemetery on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. She will be laid to rest by her husband, Brooke Smith.

Who's In Control

In a few weeks we will have the opportunity to elect a new leader for our country. Every person who is of voting age has the opportunity to cast their ballot the way they choose to and no one will be able to make them vote in a certain way.

100 Years Ago October 22, 1908 Arthur Hill, deputy postmaster of the San Saba Post office, is attending the State Convention of Postmasters at Fort Worth this week. He will also visit the Dallas Fair. J.M. Smith of Algerita community was trading in San Saba Monday. Ernest Williams came in on the stagecoach Tuesday and will be here a few days.

We have had no rain this week but everything is pretty and green. There has been enough moisture lately that the county burn ban has been lifted for the time being. There is a lot of yard cleaning going on during these cooler days. I have a new great grand daughter, born to Cody and Kristie Cummings on October 17th.

Reading Recommendations: The Last Flight of the Scarlet Macaw, One Woman's Fight to save the world's Most Beautiful Bird, Bruce Barcott. As a young woman, Sharon Matola lived many lives. She was a mushroom expert, an Air Force Survival Specialist, and an Iowa housewife. She hopped freight trains for fun and starred as a lion tamer in a traveling Mexican circus.

It appears, from the smiles on so many faces, that most folks in our fair Valley are surely enjoying the cooler days of Fall. Daddy & Yrs. Truly happened to be gone this past weekend on an inspection tour of such said Mule deer lease out between Sanderson & Marathon, but Richard Barker related that they registered a low of 43 degrees one morning out near the Liveoak-Fairview line.

Receipts totaled 1133 head for the week. The market was very active with packer bulls selling $3 higher and Packer cows selling $2 higher. Stocker heifers sold $2 higher and stocker steers sold $1 higher. Feeder steers sold $2 higher while feeder heifers showed no change. Rep. The San Saba Ladies Golf Association met October 16, 2008 for play day with the Chair for October, Dorothy Sterner, calling for a game of even on the front nine, odd on the back nine, less half your handicap. First Place went to Dorothy and she had a great day, also scoring Low Gross and Low Net for the day, scored a birdie, and chipped in to split the chip in pot with Bobbie Churchill.

Dear Editor, Members of the North San Saba Water Supply Corporation (NSSWSC) have seen their water rates raised several times in the last three years. The last increase raised the minimum to $59.75 and members using 8,000 gallons will pay $84.07. The first increase this year affected the May water usage and the second affected the July water usage.

A marriage was about to be broken, because the husband wouldn't do anything with his wife. The preacher said, "Do things with your wife. Go to church with her. Wash the dishes with her. Mop the floor with her." While there are exceptions, there must be companionship. Marriage is a combination of courtship and companionship.

Fall weather is wonderful, cool nights and the daytime temp is just about right. We could still use some more moisture. The last rain really made the oats and wheat jump up and the deer are out and about so watch carefully when you are out on the road. Bobby Clark underwent surgery on his knee last week in Round Rock and is recuperating at home.

Another beautiful week has passed and this coming week has the promise of more refreshing fall weather. I love the cool evenings and warm days of our Texas autumn. The trees are just beginning to get a touch of color; we may not rival the eastern states but we can still lift a weary spirit with a splash of color! Chalk up another Coyote win.

Obituaries

Geraldine (Jerri) Ellen Smith, 66, of Ormond Beach, FL passed away August 31, 2008 in Florida. Mrs. Smith was born in Holly Hill, Florida, and moved back into the Ormond Beach area in November 2007 after living 16 years in Virginia. She was a graduate of Mainland High School Class of 1959, a department store manager for Builders Square and a member of Holly Hill Church of Christ.

Rick E. McBee, 49, of San Saba, passed away Wednesday, October 15, 2008 in Teague, TX. He was born June 4, 1959 in Seminole, TX, the son of Barnie McBee and Claudia Phillips McBee. On February 10, 1990, Rick McBee and Rene’ Winter were married in Bedford, Texas. Rick was a sales associate for the Vemeer Equipment Company, a member of the Professional Golf Association, and attended the First Baptist Church in San Saba. He is survived by his wife Rene’ McBee of San Saba; sons, William Jordan McBee and Christopher Braden McBee; and daughter, McKenzie Rene’ McBee all of San Saba.

Ruth V. (Harkey) Mackie 88 passed away August 31, 2008 in Rockport, Texas. She was born in San Saba, Texas July 20, 1920, to Levi T. Harkey and Ida Simmons Harkey. Services were held September 4, 2008 in San Antonio, Texas. She was buried in San Jose Burial Park. She was preceded in death by husband Frank L.

Mrs. Poochie (Wilma) Johnson, 87, of Cherokee, Texas passed away, Friday October 10, 2008 in San Saba. She was born May 6, 1921 in San Saba, the daughter of William Gage and Molly Taylor Gage. On October 17, 1947, Wilma Gage and A.F. (Poochie) Johnson were married in Brownwood, Texas.

School & Sports

The 7th Dillos traveled to Early last Thursday to battle the Longhorns. It was a hard fought game and both sides played their hearts out. Early won the toss and elected to receive. Oscar Villa handled the kicking duties for the Dillos. Early made a decent return before being brought down by T.J.

San Saba's 8th Grade Dillos won a close battle with the Early 8th Grade Longhorns in Early last Thursday night. The game came down to the last seconds to secure the victory, 14-12. Early kicked to San Saba to start the game. Sean Argote returned the kick to the 35 yard line.

A good crowd cheered the varsity Coyotes to a 56-6 victory over the Robert Lee Steers in the second game of district play. The Varsity Coyotes are now 7-0 on the year and 2-0 in district! The varsity Coyotes play Rochelle at Rochelle at 7:30p.m. on Friday, October 24th. The Jr.

The #4 state ranked Richland Springs Coyotes improved to 7-0 on the season and 2-0 in District 9 play by defeating the Robert Lee Steers by a score of 56-6. It was a great night for the Coyotes as they looked very good on both sides of the ball. The offensive was explosive as ever.

Using an aerial attack not seen by the Dillos in several years, the Early Longhorns defeated San Saba 35-7 last Friday night at Longhorn Stadium. Nick Lyle of Early completed 21 of 34 passes for 327 yards and four touchdowns. It is the most yards passing against the Armadillos since Kris Heavner of Johnson City had 366 yards on 21-32 passing and four scores in a 47-39 loss to San Saba in 2002.

The fans who made the trip to Paint Rock Friday night were treated to a tremendous football game between the Cherokee Indians and Paint Rock Indians. The Cherokee Indians came away with the victory and are now 2-0 in district play. The back and forth battle resulted in 86 points being put on the board in the first half alone.

The Jr. High Indians defeated Paint Rock 33-7 last Thursday. Burnam Sloan caught a TD pass from Stephen Austermann, a TD pass from E.J. Borchers, and scored another TD on a run. Anthony Montalbo forced a fumble which EJ recovered for a TD. EJ scored a TD on a run, and scored 2 PATs.

On a very pretty day on the Goldthwaite Golf Course, a competitive cross country meet took place. Medal winners for San Saba were 1st Alexa Maxcey; 2nd Danessa Vasquez; 4th Rebecca Parades; 7th Pedro Prado. Ballinger was the power in varsity girls as they came in 1-3-5 with Vasquez and Paredes filling in the open spors.

Splashed across news headlines recently is a report on schools across the nation called Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). School districts in Texas are under an umbrella of accountability and AYP is the federal or national level of accountability for schools. This year to earn a label called “Meets AYP”, the school campuses AND the districts had to test at least 95 percent of their students and at least 60 percent of the students had to pass the reading/English language arts state exam and at least 50 percent had to pass the mathematics exam.
