Sheriff Brown informed the San Saba News that there has been a rash of burglaries out in the county. He stated that right now the suspects are hitting hunters camps and vehicles, but does believe that the suspects can and will hit homes. Sheriff Brown believes that the suspects are familiar with the area and that is why it is difficult to make contact with them.

The San Saba County Commissioners Court met on Tuesday, October 13th at 1:30 p.m. in the County Judge’s Chambers. Judge Byron Theodosis called the meeting to order. The City Council of San Saba, Texas met for a regular meeting on Tuesday, October 13th in the City Hall Council Chambers. Mayor Jordan called the meeting to order. The San Saba Garden Club Yard of the Month for October is owned by Larry and Carol Bourke at 1207 West Wallace Street. The Bourkes went to school here and moved back after spending time in Houston. Carol has spent a lot of time and labor in this yard which contains many flowers such as roses, cosmos, zinneas, dahlias and many more.
Mother and daughter team up in the fight against breast cancer. Donna and Laura Blossman will be participating in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day 60 mile walk November 6, 7, 8. Thousands of people commit to the 60 mile walk each year in an effort to raise money for cancer research.
The Mason Country will be staged on Thursday, October 29, at the Odeon Theater in downtown Mason. Heart of Texas Recording Artists Curtis Potter will headline the monthly show. Tickets are $10.00 and will be for sale at the door. Curtis Potter has become a legend in Country Music focusing his career on the great Texas Dance Hall music featuring Honky Tonk standards and Western Swing favorites. Potter was born in Cross Plains, Texas.
Beginning October 29th and 30th, citizens who need to re-instate their driver license or get a copy of their driver record must submit their required documentation online or via federal mail, rather than at DPS offices. David Whatley will be the featured speaker at the Lunch & Learn on Wednesday, October 28th, 12 noon at the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. Whatley, who is the Manager of Parks Operations for LCRA will give an overview of the LCRA Parks System, the Colorado River Trail, and then discuss the newest addition to the system, our San Saba River Nature Park.

Judge Byron Theodosis welcomed the group and Clay Nettleship gave the invocation. Judge Theodosis gave a review of what has been done to “fix” the stately historic courthouse and Attorney David Williams also supplied information.
Scott Sanderson is headed to Austin where he will represent the nine county Brownwood district in the TxDOT statewide Truck ROADEO being held October 30. Sanderson was high score for San Saba in a tri-county competition between Lampasas, Mills and San Saba County maintenance sections. He held on to first place as he competed against 19 other drivers at the district drive-off held in September, securing his place at the state competition.
Carolyn McDowell gave the program "Second Addition". She gave a slide presentation on how to redecorate our homes by recycling or buying small items to change the look of our homes. Tablecloths may be used as drapes, or added window treatments. We could paint a lamp and purchase a new shade to have a new look, as well as rearranging pictures or items on shelves or tables. We registered 1.6 inches of rain Tuesday of last week. We are “ in the green” around here. The gospel singing was very well attended and we had three good piano players who enjoyed trying out the new piano. Doing the honors for us were, Kay McKee, Arlene Stratton and Lanell Parson.

He died, as many of his shipmates did, when the USS Barton (DD-599) sank in combat off Savo Island (just off Guadalcanal Island) on the night of 13 November, 1942.

If the guys who report the weather are anywhere near right, we just might be getting some rain this week. So far this past week the weather has been wonderful. Just like in the story about the three bears when Goldie Locks said “Not too hot and not too cold just right.” Jackie and Charlene Brister; Phillip, Bobbie Morris and Steve; Shari Raesz went elk hunting in New Mexico recently and Jackie got a nice elk.
We’ve certainly had a changeable weather week! It never pays to put away your seasonal clothes here in Texas. I hauled out winter clothes at the beginning of the week, then changed to summer clothes and then back to winter by Thursday. Folks were scrambling for jackets at the junior high game against Robert Lee.
Nov. 3rd Election
On Election Day, Nov. 3, Texans will cast their ballots on constitutional amendments ranging from allowing public beach access to protecting residential property owners from appraisals based on potential use rather than current use. All of the proposed constitutional amendments are important, but I ask that you pay particular attention to Proposition 11, as it significantly affects the rights of private property owners.

The monarch butterfly’s distinctive black and orange wings make it one of the most easily recognized butterflies in the sky. To potential predators, that same regal pattern signals the dangerous presence of milkweed, a poisonous plant on which monarch caterpillars feed. Native to the Americas, the monarch has colonized such far-flung locales as western Europe and Australia.
Brady McGee shot this bull elk in Western New Mexico in September 2009. It scored 325 in the Pope & Young archery record book.
Most of you should surely agree that this ranks as just about the best time of year to be in the most bodacious place there might be in this fair Country. Many folks probably think alot of Home, wherever that might be located, but testimony to our Town is reinforced by the fact of so many folks buying & moving here to be in a prettier place, which is also a bit more rural.

On November 30, 2009, the training necessary to obtain a private applicators license will be presented by Jamie Osbourn, Llano County Extension Agent. This training will be held at the Llano American Legion Hall and will begin at 8:30 a.m. with registration and include the noon meal. The $60.00 registration fee also includes study materials and reference manuals.
Every year the San Saba County 4-H Club holds different fundraisers to help support the club’s activities. This year’s raffle fundraiser was a great success! The 4-H’ers sold raffle tickets for a Stainless Steel Remington 700 SPS .308 Rifle. The tickets were sold individually for ten dollars a piece and twenty five dollars for three.

Alma Exie (Bell) Waldie, age 95, of Georgetown, Texas and formerly of Springdale, Arkansas, passed away on Friday, October 16, 2009 at the Wesleyan at Scenic in Georgetown, Texas. She was born in Liberty Hill, Texas on January 21, 1914 to Isaac Gordon Bell and Ada (Anderson) Bell. Alma was a member of Crestview Baptist Church in Georgetown.
Marie Beasley, 69, of San Saba, passed away on Saturday, October 10, 2009 at Brownwood Regional Hospital in Brownwood, Texas. She was born August 12, 1940 in Eden, Texas, the daughter of Marion E. Crawford and Una V. Lee Crawford. Marie Beasley and Charles Edward Beasley were married in Brady on November 6, 1958.
Ronald (Ronnie) Edwards, 72, of San Saba, passed away on Saturday, October 17, 2009 at Brownwood Regional Hospital. He was born September 22, 1937 in Inglewood CA, the son of Julian Hamilton Edwards and Cleo Stalcup Edwards. Ronald Edwards and Sara Marshall were married on June 5, 1992 in Durant, OK.
Worth Jones, 86, of San Saba, passed away on Thursday, October 15, 2009 at Scott and White Hospital in Temple, Texas. He was born August 1, 1923 in San Saba County, Texas, the son of Doc Jones and Annie Roberds Jones. Worth Jones and Marthaguion Clark were married in San Saba, Texas.

School & Sports

The San Saba 7th grade traveled to Brady Thursday night, October 8th and beat up on the Bulldogs. At the start of the game the Dillos completed a pass from Welch to Gonzales for a 55 yd. run, all the way down to the 5 yd. line. Then Zimmer scrambled around the end for the first score.
Jesse Perez was selected by the Cherokee Pep Squad as their Beau and Sammi White was named the Cherokee Football Team’s Sweetheart.
Some had the Eastern-most Indians of the district to get beat by the Western-most Indians by over 40 points. The Cherokee Indians played excellent defense against the shifty, quick Paint Rock offense and held them to 34 points. The problem came when the Cherokee Indians’ offense could only manage 32 points.
Fifth grade students at Richland Springs will attend the Farm Safety Day in San Saba on Wednesday, Oct. 28 with fifth grade sponsor Sue Ransom. Fifth graders enjoy this yearly safety day camp to learn about farm safety. The Richland Springs junior high will play Rochelle junior high at Rochelle at 6:00 p.m.
Dean King #75, Danny Tillery #42, and Ben VanCleave #11 block up front for another Richland Springs PAT. The PAT crew was busy last Friday as the Coyotes dominated Robert Lee 62-8. Richland Springs (5-1) matches up with Rochelle (6-0) at 7:30 Friday, Oct. 23 for the District 9 shoot-out at Coyote Field.
After a scoreless first half against the Early Longhorns last Friday at Rogan Field, the San Saba Armadillos erupted for 31 second half points. The win guaranteed the first winning season in San Saba since 2000. San Saba received the opening kick and gained a first down before being stopped on 4th down at the 42.
The San Saba 8th Grade Dillos were soundly defeated by a very quick Early 8th Grade squad at Rogan field last Thursday night. The final score was Early 44 and San Saba 8. San Saba kicked to Early to start the game. Early ran 3 plays and scored. The PAT was good, 8-0 Early.
San Saba ISD will release all campuses for an early release day for students on Friday, October 23, 2009. Lunch will be served for students on this date and the regular schedule will be modified. School will be released for the day at 12:45 p.m. for teacher professional development.
Monday, October 19, 2009, the San Saba Cross Country runners traveled to Brady for a meet on the course that will be used for district next Monday, October 26, 2009. All the district teams were there except Comanche who went to Baird. Brady was very strong in the girls as they placed 5 of the top 9.
On a Wednesday instead of a Tuesday which was very wet, the Cross Country meet took place. Still some mud and standing water, but lots of sun made running possible. Due to the flu, San Saba only fielded one team, Varsity Girls who came in sixth. Medal winners include:1st-Danessa Vasquez, Shellby Buttler; 2nd-McKenna Maxcey; 5th-Pedro Prado; 6th-Hector Paez; 10th-Jennifer Watkins Results: Varsity Girls 1.

Last Thursday, the San Saba JV team traveled to Early to take on the Longhorns. An opening drive score, capped off with a run of 8 by Zack Davis, put the Armadillos in front 6-0. The two point conversion was no good. Early controlled the ball on offense as well and also scored.

It may be open week in football, but the business of school never ceases. This is a REALLY big week in the lives of our San Saba High School Teachers. Friday, October 23, which is an early release day for students, marks the day that SSHS teachers get their new Apple Laptop Computers.
The Real Reason for Red Ribbon Week!
At the end of October each year we celebrate Red Ribbon Week. The Red Ribbons we wear during this time are a symbol of unity against the illegal use of drugs. This public display began in response to the kidnapping and murder of Federal Drug Enforcement Agent, Enrique Camarena in 1985 while he was investigating drug traffickers.
