Health disparities between men and women due to habits, not genetics
For all the wives, daughters and girlfriends who have wrung their hands over the health habits of the men in their lives, science is beginning to back up their argument. Men’s notorious reluctance to see a doctor may be contributing to a growing gap in cancer rates between men and women. According to a recent study, men are more likely to develop and die from cancer than women – even those cancers affecting both sexes.

ECCLESIASTES 8: "There is no man that hath power over the spirit: neither hath he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war: neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it." (8) "But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days which are as a shadow: because he feareth not God." There have been millions and millions of people who have lived in this flesh and blood life prior to our existence, and not even one has been able to prolo ...
Bringing Broadband to Rural Texas
Today, driven by the incredible pace of innovation and the pressures of global commerce, demand for broadband, or high speed Internet access, is sweeping the nation and changing the way we live. Small businesses that once relied solely on walk-up business and local customers may now offer their goods and services in the worldwide marketplace through the Internet.
School sports are starting back up. What is the best fuel for athletes? Carbohydrates. Either simple sugars (such as naturally occurring sugars in fruits and juices) or complex carbohydrates (the starches in whole grain products, rice, cereal, oatmeal and other plant foods). These carbohydrates provide not only energy but also important vitamins and minerals.

Last week Cyndi and I took a couple of days off and went camping with the Davis family. We didn’t go far—to Inks Lake. That is a beautiful state park with many activities and things to do. Part of our time was spent at a place called Devil’s Hole. Maybe you are asking what a preacher would do at Devil’s Hole.

A group of soldiers was trying to push a loaded wagon up a hill, when a rider on horseback came along. A corporal in charge was shouting,"Push harder!" But they were unsuccessful. "Why don't you help them?" asked the rider. "Because I'm a corporal," he answered. Getting off his horse, the stranger helped the men, and together they pushed the wagon up the hill. He said, "The next time you have a job too big for your men, send for me, General George Washington." Graciousness is the key to g ...
INS AND OUTS OF GOD’S LOVE
Have you encountered God’s love? It’s something you need to confront and experience. Perhaps you have not known God’s love because you do not understand what it’s all about. There are two important aspects to the love of God. On one hand, we have the historic objective demonstration of God’s love.
The best news from the Bend is the wonderful rain that was received this past week. Friday a light rain and then Saturday a down pour that made the total for last week over three inches. The bad news is the high temperatures are returning. Kristi Messer and Jane Clark attended a baby shower held at the Father’s House for Dana Perez of Austin.
Back in the day, students in their final year at most smaller high schools in Texas looked forward to their “senior trips” as capstones of their educational pilgrimage. They typically raised the funds, with the final figure dictating the type and length of trip, destination and mode of travel. Some have flown to foreign destinations, living it up in four-star hotels. Our senior trip was made to the Texas Gulf Coast in a “yellow dog” school bus, with our superintendent at the steering ...
Well, I can guarantee a few prayers have been answered this week! We had three beautiful rains to bring a little relief to our parched land. Our total was a little less than two inches, but several folks received that in the Saturday night downpour. I was blessed to drive to San Angelo in the Thursday rain, and we were driving back from Houston on Saturday.
Farmer's Markets
More and more Texans are discovering farmers’ markets, where farmers sell their crops directly to the public. The friendly atmosphere and fresh produce from local producers are big draws for many consumers. According to USDA, about 60 percent of farmers’ market customers say one of the things they value most about the venue is supporting local agriculture.
Recently I attended a seminar at church on financial freedom, strength and getting out of debt. It is much needed in these times. Not only did it teach you how to get out of debt but how to stretch your dollar or make it go farther. The Bible talks about prosperity and being well off not only in the pocket book but in all areas of life.

Most of you will readily agree that we are still experiencing our fair share of summer weather, even though we got to enjoy some cooler than usual days the latter part of last week with the 3-4 days of intermittent thunder showers. The afternoon temp. is still getting up around the hundred degree mark, but the mornings have seemed a bit more crisp the past couple of days & the low spots are cooling a bit more around dark.

The “green” movement is encouraging people to minimize their carbon footprints and recycle to eliminate excess waste. However, many don’t know that their pets can also contribute to the destruction of the environment.
Drought, chinch bugs, disease all among the suspects...
Lawns throughout the Lone Star State are dead and dying. While drought is the main suspect, other forces may be at work, according to Texas AgriLife experts. “Chinch bugs thrive in hot, dry weather and feed primarily on St. Augustine grass, but can also damage Bermuda and zoysia grass, although this is rare,” said Molly Keck, integrated pest management specialist with the Texas AgriLife Extension Service in Bexar County.

I just wanted each of you to know that you should be so proud, Many, many is the time you pleased a cheering crowd! It wasn’t all easy, each one of you know this is true. You performed when it was hot, and then so cold you’d turn blue. Think of all the hard work and all the cakes you had to sell. There’s all ages of you represented, and the tales you could tell. I’m only a mom that sat back and listened and I watched it all. I’ve watched you all grow and change and a few things ...
