Fire Captain Johnie Shahan said “it was just a little thing, only about 25 acres.” It was a little thing to Johnie but a really big thing to landowner Kevin Weinrich’s family and nearby property owners. Weinrich’s property is toward the end of CR 132, past the Harmony Ridge Cemetery. He discovered the fire about 10:00 a.m.
The San Saba County Commissioners’ Court met on Monday, July 27th at 9 a.m. in the County Judge’s Chambers. County Judge Byron Theodosis called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone. Neal Alexander, San Saba County Extension Agent Agriculture, gave the invocation followed by everyone joining for the pledges to the American and Texas flags. Pat Pool, Jackie Brister and Neal Alexander were in attendance from the San Saba County Soil & Water Conservation District.
Dora Miller, President of the San Saba Rotary Club, (Left) presents Georgia Harris with the Dove Project a check for $250.00 to go toward the purchase of school supplies which will be given away at the Back to School Health & Safety Fair. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Lawhan of Cleburn, Tx. and Mr. and Mrs. Cecil D. Scott of Cherokee, Tx. are proud to announce the engagement of their children, Cynthia Lawhan and Joseph Scott. Seventy years ago this May fifty-nine young people lined up in caps and gowns to receive a diploma from San Saba High School. Today, eight of the twenty still living are living in San Saba. On Saturday, July 11, these locals had a get-together at Gage's Barbeque. Everyone arrived at 10:30 to visit, look at pictures from days gone by and remember the good times.
The hot and dry conditions in Central Texas are impacting our region in many ways, including one that is not especially desirable: Snake bites are up. Fifteen Red Hatters enjoyed lunch on the historic square in Burnet on Wednesday, July 22nd. The group had lunch at the charming Tea-licious Café (www.tea-licious.com). The café, which is decorated with antique tea cups, beautiful quilts and cozy tables with vintage tablecloths offers a variety of quiches, interesting vegetable and fruit salads, and healthy and hearty sandwiches.

The Freemasons of San Saba Masonic Lodge No. 612 will hold their first stated meeting of the Masonic year on Saturday evening, August 1. A meal of boiled shrimp, corn, potatoes, salad and desserts will be provided by the members of the Order of Eastern Star. Supper will be served at 6:30 p.m.

Mark Gray from Louisiana has been visiting in Cherokee with family. Dusty and MaryDell Rhoades are home from a trip to Branson. They also visited in Texakana with Mary Dell’s family. Sunday starting at 12:30 p.m. there will be Ana Uribe’s Photo Exhibition at the home of Cristy Austerman. It will be a come and go event.

25 Years Ago August 2, 1984 Teddy Price, of San Saba, is in the Community Hospital in San Antonio being prepared for a kidney transplant. Price's three brothers and two sisters have been tested as an acceptable donor. Dr. H.V. This is a topic that seems to get swept under the rug or ignored completely: Male Victims. While the numbers are less than that of female victims the fact that there are numbers at all demands that we give prudence to this need. I knew the speed limit was sixty miles per hour but I was not really paying much attention to my speed. There was very little traffic and besides I was late for an appointment. Well up the little rise and on the other side was a black and white or a highway patrol car.

When it comes to changing people, all sorts of methods are used. For the most part, for most people, lack of education and poor environment are the main culprits in fostering undesirable character. How do we affect change? To change people for the better we exclaim, “Educate them! Change their surroundings!” Will changing a person’s environment really change how that person thinks or feels?

Hey everyone! We finally made it back home! The girls are all safely home with happy parents. My daughter-in-laws, Heather and Danna, had never let their children be away that long. I’m glad they allowed them to spend this delightful time with me!We certainly crammed a ton of memories into our little memory books. I unpacked around noon Thursday.

NOAA scientists today announced the arrival of El Niño, a climate phenomenon with a significant influence on global weather, ocean conditions and marine fisheries. El Niño, the periodic warming of central and eastern tropical Pacific waters, occurs on average every two to five years and typically lasts about 12 months. NOAA expects this El Niño to continue developing during the next several months, with further strengthening possible.
We might have been a bit short of moisture in the form of rainfall around our Fair Valley the past couple of weeks, but we are most certainly getting our share of hot, sunny weather. Mills County AgriLife Extension Service will be hosting a Rainwater Harvesting and Drip Irrigation seminar on Monday, August 3, 2009. Mr. Billy Kniffen, AgriLife Extension Service Water Specialist, will be the speaker. Mr. Kniffen will give a demonstration on how to hook up a drip irrigation system for landscape purposes. Obituaries

Dolly Norene Gage Letbetter, a native of San Saba, Texas, was born on December 11, 1916 and went to meet her Lord July 21, 2009 at the age of 92. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and set a beautiful example for all her family through her godly life.
James Wayland Mann, 88, passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 22, 2009, in Justin. Funeral: 12:30 p.m. Monday, July 27th in Laurel Land Memorial Chapel in Fort Worth. Interment: Laurel Land Memorial Park of Fort Worth. Known to many as JW, Wayland, Papaw and Pop, he was born Jan. 20, 1921, in Richland Springs.
Merlyn Lester Altom, of Cherokee, Texas, passed away on Monday, July 27, 2009 in Llano, Texas at the age of 79 years. He was born April 9, 1930 in Coleman County, Texas to Andrew Altom and Hattie (Beeler) Altom. Merlyn was a Patrolman for Dallas Police Department and retired after 27 years of service.
Orville Summers, 84, of San Saba, passed away on Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at Llano Memorial Hospital. He was born August 19, 1924 in San Saba County, the son of Jessie James Summers and Edna Inez Dobbs Summers. Orville Summers and Bobbye Joe Parker were married on December 21, 1951 in San Saba County.

Al J. Hamrick, volunteer fireman of San Saba Volunteer Fire Department in San Saba, Texas attended the 80th Annual Municipal Fire School July 19-24.
