Thanks to a collaboration with Hill Country Community Action Association, Inc. the 60% deficit in funding for the Dove Project will be met for the months of July and August. HCCAA received notice of extra funding from President Obama’s Stimulus package to underwrite an expansion of their Case Management Program.

With funding approved by the San Saba Commissioner's Court on July 2, 2009, the San Saba Co. Sheriff's Office was able to purchase five new TASERS. Each device is integrated with digital video cameras, a holster for each officer and training materials in order for them to become certified users.

The City Council of the City of San Saba met for a regular meeting Tuesday, July 14th at 6 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers. Mayor Ken Jordan called the meeting to order and announced a quorum present. Councilman Charlie Peeler gave the invocation followed by everyone joining for the pledges to the American and Texas flags.
The July Joe Ragsdale Employee of the Month award was presented to Eric Morgan.

San Saba Independent School District was recently notified that the ISD is the recipient of a $500,000 competitive technology grant. The Technology Immersion Strand of the Vision 2020, Cycle 2 Grant Program will provide San Saba High School with a variety of technological enhancements. Included in the technology products will be a laptop for teachers and a laptop for all high school students.

In an effort to streamline bus routes and effectively manage transportation costs, San Saba ISD has redrawn bus routes and reformed ridership pickup locations.
At the June SSISD School Board meeting, the Trustees approved a new route plan that will save the District 25,000 miles and cut three route positions.

Rusty and Tiffanie Wright of Odessa are proud to announce the birth of their first child, Lillian Ruby, born at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa on July14, 2009. A family council is an independently organized group consisting of families, legal guardians, and friends of residents in the same nursing home or assisted living facility.
The family council works to improve resident nursing care; become informed on the regulations governing nursing homes; and lend support to family members. Council members have a voice in making suggestions to staff and facility administration and owners on policies and the care of their residents.

The statewide Twogether in Texas healthy marriage initiative is offering San Saba County couples $60 off their marriage license fees. All a couple has to do is attend a free eight-hour secular healthy marriage workshop. The workshop will be held at San Saba City Hall Chambers, 303 S. Clear, San Saba, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday, August 1st.

The descendents of Maurice J. and Cora Ell Spears Lusty and Harry G. and Pearl Lusty met Sun., July 19th for an annual barbecue lunch, followed by a an auction of family items. We had 58 descendents present. Several absent due to illness and were sorely missed. One family member had just returned from Stroud, England with new pictures of our ancestors homestead-thanks to Ann Rea.

Robert and Sue Broyles spent the day in Gatesville Friday visiting with Will and Sarah Broyles and the twin great-grandchildren, Lily and Leslie. The twins are keeping mom and dad busy day and night.

July 23, 1959
A county-wide meeting for all San Saba county livestock producers will be held in the District Courtroom at 8 p.m. Thursday, July 30 to discuss the new brucellosis law, and seven other livestock laws that become effective on Sept. 1, announces Billy F. Kidd, county agent.
A total of 19 youths have registered for the two life saving courses which will begin on Monday, July 27, announced Buddy Priest, who will be the instructor for the courses.

Today (Monday) has been a cloudy, rainy day. I don’t know how much it measured, probably not very much. The temperature has remained under 100 degrees and is supposed to stay that way until later this week.
There were 13 of us in attendance at the community meeting last Saturday night.

Reports of rain all around us, but so far nothing except for a drop or two, just enough to give you the smell of rain and get your hopes up. Maybe someday it will cloud up and pour down enough to measure in the rain gauge. The Indians used to have a rain dance to make it rain.

Years ago, when I was in college I found a second job pumping gas in a service station. One thing that amazed me was the amount of gas people put in their cars.
Some people would drive up in a not so new car or an old clunker and they would want me to put five or ten dollars worth of gas or fill it up.

Larry Cowart Denman, 65, of Tulsa, OK. died at his home on June 27, 2009, after an extended illness. Larry was born on July 11, 1943, in Ft. Worth, TX., to Hurley and Lorraine Charlotte (Cowart) Denman. He began school in Richland Springs, TX and graduated from Forest Park High School in Forest Park, GA.

Thelma Chandler Wilson, 93, of Stephenville, died Wednesday, July 15, 2009 in Stephenville.
Funeral services were at 10:00 AM, Saturday, July 18th at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Jack Riley and Rev. Steve Hogard officiating. Burial followed at Bishop Cemetery in Erath County. Visitation was at 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, on Friday at Stephenville Funeral Home.
Thelma was born September 8, 1915 in Parker County to the late Joseph Stanley and Nora Trotter Chandler.

July 10th and 11th, San Saba Youth Baseball/Softball Association held their fundraiser co-ed softball tournament . There were a total of 11 teams from San Saba county and one of them from Coleman. The Midnite Madness Tournament started at 6 p.m. Friday night and lasted through 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

On July 16, 2009 the San Saba Ladies Golf Association hosted the monthly Traveling 4-Ball Tournament with 25 ladies participating from clubs in the Central Texas area.
I am happy to report that all nine of the San Saba ladies scored their points! Janet Hoytt, our newest participant, scored the maximum of 40 points!

The San Saba Elementary School will hold Pre-Kindergarten 3 year old and 4 year old registration on August 4, 2009 from 8:00 am to 1:30 pm in the San Saba Elementary School Cafeteria. Kindergarten registration will also take place at this same time and place. Parents are welcome to come at their convenience between this time to register and complete necessary forms required to check qualifications.

It’s a great time to spend together looking for that “just-right” outfit for the first day of school.
