Here are a few suggestions: First, make a budget. Compare what’s going out with what’s coming in. If your expenses exceed your income, you’ll never get ahead. Track what you spend.

Perhaps this should not be called a Biblical Gem because after many years of writing Gems, this is the first time I am offering information without a scripture to discuss. I will do two things in this document that you have not seen from me before. I will repeat information on Iraq that I have used before, because many may not have seen it and I think it is appropriate for this time in history.
Tips for your New Year’s Resolutions
It’s that time of year when we all think about changes we want to make in our lives. For many people, those resolutions include a vow to eat more healthfully, exercise or lose weight. Before you start thinking about how to make your change and assure it happens, you have to figure out what changes you want to make.

A New Year
2008 came and is on the verge of going into the shadows. As we look back at this year we ask how did we do? Are we happy with the things that took place last year? Did we leave some things undone? Are there more things that we can accomplish?
90 Years Ago-Jan. 2, 1919 War is what Sherman said it was and then some. Since peace has perched upon the Olive branch, if some humane official will now suppress the swivel chair writers of wooden editorials, bulletins and some calamity befall the author of Confessions of Roxanne (she must have been a gay old sister) we can manage to get through life with the other little vexations that daily beset us.....W.D.
We have arrived at the end of the old year and the new one begins on Thursday. We had no rain at all in December. That brings our years’ total to 17.7 inches. It is hard to imagine that we received 46.5 last year. This is the driest year we have had in 25 years.
Reading Recommendations: The Heretic Queen, Heiress of Misfortune, Pharaohs Beloved, Michelle Moran. The winds of change are blowing through Thebes. A devastating palace fire has killed the Eighteenth Dynasty's Royal family, all with the exception of Nefertari, the niece of the reviled former queen, Nefertiti. The girl's deceased family has been branded as heretical, and no one in Egypt will speak their names.
Seems as if we would never get through with the holidays of the Christmas celebration, but here we are right in the middle of the one on the advent of the New Year. While we are certainly assured of being rather weary of all the Turkey, Dressing, and all the trimmings that seem truly traditional of the Xmas season, it will be good to welcome the New Year with table fare of Blackeyed peas, sow-belly, Cabbage, & cornbread or whatever you deem most appropriate for New Year’s day.
Several years ago my wife and I took some young married couples to a marriage retreat and seminar that a good friend of mine was teaching. We had a great time while we were there and at the very end we all stood up and repeated our marriage vows to each other.
2Co 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. There were times in my life when I said "I wish I could start all over, just put all this mess behind me and get a brand new start at life".
The Stargazer’s Crystal Ball
Have you ever wondered how the Stargazer predicts astronomical events with such certainty? Does it seem like he has a cosmic crystal ball? Actually what I use is far more reliable than the devices of fortune tellers. In foretelling night sky events, I rely on smart people who know how to calculate the movements of the Sun, Moon, planets, stars and other heavenly objects we enjoy watching.
A Goal for the Year Ahead
Saul set his heart to demonize and persecute Christians. Christ took hold of Him on a lonely desert road outside Damascus, Syria. Without sight for three days, he contemplated this Jesus he so vehemently opposed. A man named Ananias went to Saul and spoke to him about Jesus. “Why do you delay?
This will be the last bit of news from Bend for the year of 2008. Santa Claus didn’t bring the rain that we so badly need. Saturday a cold wind was blowing out of the North, and it was hard to breathe because of all the dirt and dust in the air.
This is the final column of the year! I cannot believe the year has ended so quickly. Since school let out on the 19th, I have had a house full of company. I met my sister in Dallas on Monday. In Texas, we take pride in doing things on a grand scale. When it comes to cotton production, I am proud Lone Star State cotton producers make a Texas-sized contribution to the world, growing nearly a tenth of all the world’s cotton right here in Texas. In fact, Texas is the leading cotton producer in the U.S., growing almost half the nation’s cotton supply last year and more than one-third of the nation’s output in 2008.
