Cherokee Home for Children will celebrate its 50th anniversary on Sunday, September 28th, from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. Danny Duggan, Executive Director of the Home, stated that a re-dedication of the Home will be followed by the dedication of two new much needed additions to the Home's facilities.
Everyone is invited to share in this special and joyous celebration.

The annual Cherokee Home for Children's auction for 2008 will be held Saturday, September 27th, at 9:30 a.m. at the Home, which is located two miles north of Cherokee on Highway 16. Lots of furniture, appliances, collectibles, lawn and garden equipment, and other great items will be auctioned.
This annual event is made possible through the gracious benevolence from Church of Christ members throughout the State of Texas.

Although fall has arrived, the danger of grass fires is still with us. Firefighters responded to this fire (pictured at right) last Thursday afternoon on FM 1031 approximately two miles south of San Saba. A number of acres burned before the fire was brought under control early that same evening.

Llano Alliance for Drug Intervention along with the San Saba Police Department hosted a presentation, Tuesday Sept. 16, about the growing meth problem in Llano and the surrounding counties.

Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Barrier IV were married July 2, 2008, in the Mt. Timpanogas Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in American Fork, Utah. The bride, the former Miss Julleen Nelson, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Nelson of Provo, Utah. The groom is the son of Susan Kay Barrier of San Saba and Raymond Barrier,III of Lubbock, Texas.

Nathan & Shawna Shahan of Heath have been blessed with the birth of their fine second son, Grant Keith Shahan, who arrived on August 14th in Rockwall Presbyterian Hospital. Grant weighed 7 pounds 10 ounces and was 18 inches long. His big brother, Jackson, age 21 months, welcomes him into the family along with his grandparents, Keith & Debbie Shahan of San Saba, Cindy & Randy Cobb of Goldthwaite, and Kenneth Jackson of Ft.

Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) is progressing. COOL is a USDA marketing program mandated by the Farm Bill which requires retailers to notify their customers of the country of origin of beef (including veal), goat meat, lamb, pork, poultry, fish and other perishable agricultural commodities. Based on this new law that goes into effect on Sept.

The next GED test at Gatesville High School (GHS) will be given October 7th and 8th. Individuals wishing to take the test these dates must complete registration sometime between 5 and 7 p.m. on October 1st.
Registration will be held in Room 22 of Gatesville High School. Access to this room is easier if you enter the back of the school.

As part of its commitment of building healthy communities and in conjunction with the decision of going tobacco-free at all Llano Memorial Healthcare System facilities on November 20, 2008, Llano Memorial Healthcare System will offer a smoking cessation class in each of the communities it serves.
The first of these classes will be held in Llano on September 29 at 5:30 P.M.

Members of the Pierian Study Club met September 11, 2008 at 12:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the New Hope Presbyterian Church for their annual fall luncheon. The yearbook committee, Millie Burnham, Sandy Kuykendall, Joycelyn McRorey, Dorothy Miller, and Kathleen Hawkins, serving as the chair, hosted the event.
The new president, Patricia Warren, greeted the guests on their arrival, and they were presented with new yearbooks.

On Tuesday, September 2, the San Saba Garden Club held their first fall meeting at their newly renovated clubhouse in Mill Pond Park. A welcoming sight was the city’s recently built rock wheelchair ramp. Anna Wilson planted flowers in the new rock planter. The new window and shutters almost completes the exterior work covered by the grant from the city of San Saba.

Several years ago, Krista Baker and her three sons were involved in a crash that totaled their car. Only months earlier, Krista received some life-saving advice: Technicians at a child safety seat checkup told her that Zachary, her four-year-old son, should be riding in a booster seat and using it along with an adult lap and shoulder belt.

Our oldest daughter found out this week that her house is “structurally unsound.” She lives in La Porte and when Hurricane Ike came roaring through, he did not give any mercy to her and others whose homes were destroyed.
Some trees she had in her yard (big ones) were uprooted.

Dr. B.H. Haynes and Dr. S.B. Locker were in from Locker last Friday. Locker will go to the Medical College at Memphis, Tenn., again this winter. He will finish this year.

We have had no rain in the last two weeks and there is none in the forecast. Some farmers are sowing oats in hopes of having enough moisture to get them up.
Not very many turned out for the rodeo workers' appreciation supper last Saturday night. In the business meeting following the meal, Clay Miller was elected as director to replace Charles Tharp.

There has been little change in the local weather around our parts this past week, and we’re still waiting on the next rain. Everyone has been enjoying the cooler mornings now that Fall has officially arrived in our fair valley of the Pecan. The 55-60 degree mornings have been extremely enjoyable, but the 93 degree afternoon is a bit warm for Fall.

Receipts totaled 2857 head for the week. A choice offering of calves were sold with good demand and a steady market on choice stocker and feeder steers and heifers. The plainer calves and fleshy bull and heifer calves sold $5 to $7 lower. Feeder steers sold $2 lower while feeder heifers were $3 lower.

The San Saba Ladies Golf Association met September 14, 2008 for play day with the Chair for September, Sandee Hartley, calling for a practice, for the traveling 4-ball tourney which will be held September 18 in San Saba, using the point system. Jo Ann Snow was the only lady to make 40 points to win first place and also scored the low gross and low net for the day.

Most people look at losing records and immediately call it an unsuccessful season, or say "Get rid of that coach!" There is more to life and a game than wins or losses. Do you realize that our Athletic Director has more jobs and tasks to perform than just win a dang football game?!?

The Jr. High Indians lost to Lometa Thursday night. The Indians’ lone touchdown came late in the game on a 20 yard pass play from EJ Borchers to Trey Shannon. Other highlights were fumble recoveries by Burnam Sloan and Colton Cis. Stephen Austermann forced another fumble which was recovered by Borchers.

There is about as much news as there has been rain in Bend this past week. It seems that everyone is being very quiet, which may be a good thing. All the folks who showed up after Ike has returned home and things have returned to normal.
It was reported last week that Calvin and Peggy Henniger was to spend some time in Bend until the electric was back on, but they had a change of plans and decided to stay in Pasadena.

The fall bite has taken a nip out of summer! Several nights this week, I have been tempted to get my blanket while I enjoyed the evening sunset. Mind you, Texas fall is like an old man with false teeth; sometimes those teeth fall out when you least expect it, and summer is back in full swing!

Bill Sellman, 81, a resident of Cherokee, Texas passed away Saturday, September 20, 2008 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Temple, Texas. He was born March 11, 1927, in Rochelle, Texas, the son of Charlie Sellman and Vannie Long Sellman. He served with the United States Navy for 3 ½ years.

Lila Pearl "Pearlie" Walters, age 93, passed away Saturday, September 6, 2008 in Llano Memorial Hospital, Llano, Texas. She was born April 21, 1915 to John Johanson and Maggie Moore Johanson in Bluffton, Texas.

The Johnson City Eagles traveled to San Saba this past Thursday to play the 7th grade Dillos. The Dillos were ready for the challenge and looking for a fight. Johnson City won the toss and elected to receive.
Oscar Villa handled the kicking duties for the Dillos. Johnson City started with pretty good field position.

San Saba’s JV football team traveled to Johnson City on Thursday. The Dillos were in control of the game from the very first series. The Dillos won the contest 33 – 0.
Offensively, the Dillos put up 300 yards and had zero turnovers. Alan Hale had 203 yards and three touchdowns for the Dillos.

The #3 State-ranked Richland Springs Coyotes managed to rally and shake off a fierce #6 Gordon Longhorn team and keep their regular season winning streak alive, now at 64 straight wins! The final score was 60-50. The Coyotes move to 4-0, while the Longhorns drop to 3-1.
This game had plenty of fireworks throughout the entire game.

For the second year in a row, the San Saba Armadillos won their Homecoming game. The Eagles from Johnson City provided the opposition. The Dillos ran to a 35-7 win behind the running effort of Gary Gant.
Before the game started, San Saba did their Homecoming activities with one exception. The Homecoming Queen was not revealed until halftime.
San Saba received the opening kick.

The Cherokee Indians played their hearts out Friday night and came away with a much deserved 38-36 victory over the Lometa Hornets.
The Indians made the game closer than it should have been, failing to score 3 times inside the 20 yard line and going 1 for 6 on PATs.

The opening weekend of the Six-Man Pee Wee Football League is just days away. This league will have four communities competing. These communities are: Cherokee, Lometa, Rochelle and Richland Springs. A total of 103 kids, between the ages of 4 and 11, signed up between the four communities.
The league will have two divisions.
