The City Council of the City of San Saba convened for a regular meeting on Tuesday, September 9th at 6 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers. Mayor Ken Jordan called the meeting to order followed by the invocation and pledge to the American and Texas flags. Lela Mae Gatliff signed up for public comment regarding the Pecan Trade Day the 1st Saturday of each month.
San Saba High School will hold their homecoming festivities at Rogan field on September 19th at 6:45 p.m. Please note that this is BEFORE the game starts and not at halftime.
In recent days, the citizens of San Saba and San Saba County have assisted a number of families who were evacuated from the Houston area because of Hurricane Ike. The first group of evacuees, from north of Houston, began arriving in the San Saba area on Thursday. This group of five families totaling 25 people stayed in San Saba until Sunday morning when they were informed of improving conditions in their communities. The Central Texas town of Lometa will use solar power to help manage the costs of treating its wastewater, thanks to a $488,714 grant from the Office of Rural Community Affairs (ORCA). The grant will enable 50 kilowatts of solar panels to be installed at the wastewater treatment plant, which is owned and operated by LCRA and serves Lometa. “Rising energy costs are hitting everyone hard, but especially rural communities,” said Charles S.
Cowboy Up for Kids will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2008 from 6-10p.m. at Boulder Creeks Farms, located five miles east of Marble Falls, Texas, on FM 1431. Ladies of the First Baptist Church in Richland Springs have invited the ladies of the county to the September Fellowship of Christian Women’s Luncheon. Beginning at 11:30 a.m. in the downstairs fellowship hall, the luncheon features Special Fall Foods. Bring any foods you wish to share around the serving tables.
The First UM Ladies met on Monday Sept 8th for the annual Harvest Day Dinner event. As their tradition continues, ladies brought out many wonderful homemade casseroles, salads and other goodies to enjoy. Barbara Gilger and her crew of Suzanne Walters, Nelda Weatherby, and Nettie Oma Carpenter served as hostesses and decorated all the tables in a festive harvest theme. After dinner and a brief business meeting led by President Nettie Oma Carpenter, the guest speaker was introduced.
The Llano County Historical Commission is sponsoring a photo display that will be held in our historic courthouse October 18, the day of the Heritage Day Festival. Everyone has pictures that were taken through the years of a house, building, or someplace special that brings back memories. Think of the many places in Llano County that have been completely remodeled, or demolished that were captured on film and hidden away in a scrapbook.

San Saba’s First Baptist Church will be presenting a free concert this Sunday featuring Wayne Oquin. Dr. Oquin is a professor at the famed Juilliard School in New York City. His award winning composition titled “A Time to Break Silence” will be the featured presentation. The work is a song cycle that highlights the words and writings of Martin Luther King and will be performed by baritone Sidney Outlaw of the Florida Grand Opera.
LCRA is taking applications through Monday, Sept. 29, for volunteer positions on six new Regional Councils. The councils will provide a two-way communication link between LCRA and communities on issues, projects and activities affecting the region. The Regional Councils will replace the lake and river advisory panels that have served the lower Colorado River basin for 13 years.
The Mason Country Opry will be held on Tuesday, September 23, at the Odeon Theater in downtown Mason. Admission is $8.00 per person and tickets will be available at the door. Local Country Music entertainer Rhome Hill will headline the monthly show. Hill has been employed by the City of Menard for 34 years.
The 2008 Richland Springs Playday Association Buckle Series Finals was held Saturday, September 6, 2008 at the Kenny Mask Arena in Richland Springs. The 1st playday series began in June with over 50 participants from the ages of 2 to 62 competing in Cloverleaf Barrels, Pole Bending, Straightaway Barrels, Flags, Dummy Roping & a “mystery” Event.
LCRA announces its newest volunteer water quality monitor Marsha Hardy, emergency management coordinator with San Saba County. Hardy is certified as a Colorado River Watch Network water quality monitor and is monitoring at Risien Park each month and submitting her data to LCRA. Judy McCoy, San Saba Middle School teacher, also monitors at Risien Park with her students.

Last week I was standing in a checkout line of a major grocery store when I happened to notice a number of different magazines. As I stood there looking at the different covers I noticed several topics or recurring themes. There were some that mentioned romance and others that mentioned food and meal preparation but two major themes seemed to be the clothes they wore or attire and the shape or weight of their body.
No one is immune to having an infestation of those pesky little bugs that get into the food in your pantry. When you do spot one on the shelf or in your food, it’s important to know how to get rid of them and what you can do to decrease the chance that it will happen again.
The Junior High and Junior Varsity football teams were victorious in their outings against Lometa last Thursday. The Coyote JV won by a score of 54-22 and the Coyote JH won by a score of 38-6. The cheerleaders did a great job! The varsity players enjoyed a 62-14 victory over the Lometa Hornets.

Out at Elm Grove we received 1.2 inches of rain last week and were hoping for more out of the hurricane. We are enjoying the cooler temperatures but I can’t help but dread the old cold winter weather. There were only six members present at the Busy Bee quilting last Tuesday.

Weather is often the primary topic of many conversations, whether around the coffee table, lunch counters, on the phone, or over the back-yard fence. We always have plenty weather, just varying grades of good, bad, or indifferent. Many of the local folks have been complaining quite a bit the past couple of months over the lack of moisture around the major portion of San Saba County.

The stocker steers and heifers were steady except for the fleshy and plainer calves and fleshy bull calves selling $2-$3 lower.
Dear Editor, Write an Essay on who and why. This was the assignment given to me by my high school English Teacher. For me this assignment was an easy one. My Hero - is the strongest woman I know, Angela Mason. This single mother battled a drug addiction for years and she fought it alone. A drug addiction I knew nothing about until I was seventeen years old and even then the only way I found out was because of rumors.
Our car broke down, and a mechanic was working under the hood. His helper stood by with a flashlight, but he became interested in our dog and the light went out. "Shine your light," shouted the mechanic. "That's what you're here for." To the Christian our Lord said, "You are the light of the world."
Ike didn’t bring us any rain, but did bring some people up from the area to escape some of the misery that is going on around Galveston, Houston and that area along the coast. Jane Clark reported that her son Danny who has a place in Galveston received a report that his place was still standing, but didn’t know how extensive the damage was.
I was sitting on my front porch enjoying the cool breeze, when I realized that I had not written the column! Needless to say, the serene porch scene has been replaced with the tapping of the keys. What a strange week we have just passed. I know many of us are crying for rain, since all our prayers left with Hurricane Ike.
You’ve seen the grim headlines. You’ve heard the news reports about the harm a highly addictive drug called methamphetamine is causing our communities. Made from toxic and volatile chemicals, meth causes paranoia and violent behavior. It can lead to permanent physical damage, including brain and blood vessel damage, and even heart failure. However, there are thousands of unsung heroes who are working hard to turn things around.

Obituaries

Ima Jean Busby, 77, of Brownwood, passed away Monday September 8th, 2008, at her residence. Funeral services, under the direction of Davis-Morris Funeral Home, were held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday the 10th at the Austin Avenue Church of Christ in Brownwood. Interment followed at the Eastlawn Memorial Park in Early. Ima Jean was born September 19, 1930, to Clieve and Mattie (Taft) Karnes in San Saba County, Texas.
Rosa Dyess 95, died in Llano, Sunday, September 7, 2008. She was a resident of San Saba County until 2004 when she moved to Kingsland and in 2005 relocated to Care Inn in Llano, Texas where she lived until her death. She was first and foremost a homemaker and mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and Super Granny.

School & Sports

The 7th grade Dillos started their season Thursday night with a win over Goldthwaite, 14-6. The Dillos played well and were able to control the game. Goldthwaite kicked off to the Dillos to start the game. Kelan Verette fielded the kick and ran for a twelve yard gain. The Dillos had great field position by starting at the 50 yard line.
The Cherokee Jr. High football team beat the Mullin Bulldogs 34-0 to open their 2008 football season. EJ Borchers scored four touchdowns and two 1 point PATs. Stephen Austermann scored one touchdown and two 1 point PATs, and 1 fumble recovery. Burnam Sloan had 3 fumble recoveries. Colton Burris had 2 fumble recoveries.
The #3 Richland Springs Coyotes improved their record to (3-0) this past Friday night by defeating the Lometa Hornets by a score of 62-14. The game was called at the half due to the 45 point mercy rule. On the first play from scrimmage, Coyotes’ Haustin Burkhart ripped the ball out of the Lometa runner arms and the tone of the game was set.
What many had hoped would be a good football game last Friday night, turned into a one-sided affair. The San Saba Armadillos could amass only 73 yards total offense against a good Eagle team from Goldthwaite. San Saba won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. After Diego Gonzalez kicked off to the Eagles, Goldthwaite began play at the 35-yard line.
The Goldthwaite 8th Eagles took advantage of San Saba 8th Dillos turnovers to defeat them by a score of 30-6. Goldthwaite kicked to San Saba to open the season and the game. Shawn Argote raced for 30 yards good blocking by Corey Sander, Michael McKinnerney, Aaron Perez, Russell Lowe, Joe Lindsey, Nathan Amstead, Aaron Rixse and Diego Montoya. The drive stalled and San Saba gave up the ball on downs.
The Cherokee Indians came away with their first victory of the season last Friday night by defeating the Moran Bulldogs 52-6. The Indians did a good job of blocking and tackling while committing only 1 turnover and having 1 offensive series that went backwards on penalties. The Indians scored their first touchdown on an 8 yard run by Tucker Corsi 2:54 into the game.

This past Saturday was the San Saba Cross Country Meet at Mill Pond Park. Twelve teams were entered, but Hurricane Ike apparently caused three to drop out, so nine schools attended the meet. As it turned out, the cool temperatures and lack of wind made it a perfect day for runners.
San Saba's JV football team traveled to Goldthwaite on Thursday. The game was a hard fought defensive battle. Goldthwaite won the game 8-0. The kids played hard and never quit and the game went back and forth the entire evening. The difference in the game was Goldthwaite returned a punt for a touchdown. Offensively, the Dillos ran the ball well.

President Darrin Barker called to order the September 15th Regular Board meeting of the San Saba Independent School District followed by the invocation and pledges to the American and Texas flags. All board members were present. There were three people signed up for Public Comment and they were given a paper that gave information on the conduct and guidlines for speakers.
