County Judge Byron Theodosis called to order the Monday, August 25th, meeting of the Commissioners' Court. Ricky Lusty gave the invocation followed by everyone joining in the pledges to the American and Texas flags. Randy Henderson, County Chief Appraiser, explained the new proposed tax rate of .71200 (from .6589), as well as homestead exemptions. The following items were discussed, deliberated and action taken: • Unanimous vote to keep the same rental amount on County buildings leased to HHSC and Central Appraisal District at this time; • Tabled the proposed revision to San Saba County Commissioner Precinct Lines; • Each Commissioner reported the rainfall and conditions in their areas.

Jack Brawn of Circle Back Farms of Cherokee will be the featured speaker at the Lunch &Learn Wednesday September 3rd, 12 noon at the Civic Center. Brawn will discuss fall gardening. He is the owner of Circle Back Farms which sells produce to the public. He has also taken the Master Gardener classes in Llano County.

Texas AgriLife Extension Service’s annual Silver Clover Recognition Banquet celebrated its 41st year on August 1st with a banquet at the Zentner’s Daughter Steak House in San Angelo. This year’s event recognized 29 individuals who are instrumental to the success of District 7’s 4-H youth program. The honorees were selected by a committee comprised of electric cooperative personnel and AgriLife Extension officials. The banquet is sponsored by the rural electric cooperatives serving the area covered by the 23 counties in AgriLife Extension’s District 7, West Central Texas. Sponsors are Central Texas Electric Cooperative; Coleman County Electric Cooperative; Concho Valley Electric Cooperative; Hamilton County Electric Cooperative; Big Country Electric Cooperative; Pedernales Electric Cooperative; Southwest Texas Electric Cooperative and Taylor Electric Cooperative. San Saba County's honorees included Shana Paddie and Mark Hedley.

Amanda Clarice Frost and Joshua Tyler Shoemaker were united in marriage on Saturday, August 9, 2008 in San Saba, Texas. Pastor Alfred Darst of Tyler officiated. The bride is the daughter of Loren and Ann Frost of Midland, Texas. She is the granddaughter of Tommy and Paulette Moore of Midland; Carl and Patty Frost of Burnet; Scott and Karen Logan of Mobile, AL; and Harvey and Susan Bailey of Big Rapids, MI. The groom is the grandson of Ed and Peggye Whittenburg of San Saba; son of deceased Ray Shoemaker of Tyler and Bonnie Wolf of Bryan; and the grandson of Enmon and Diane Shoemaker of Leaksville, MS. The bride was attended by maid of honor, Laura Liem, of Midland; bridesmaids, Karly Hughes of Midland and Elizabeth Kuwahara, the groom’s sister, of Japan; and flower girl, Kenna Hall, of Comanche. The groom was attended by best men, Bandi Barnett of College Station; Waylon McCoury and Josh Brown, both of San Saba; and ring bearer, Brayden Wynne of Midland. The couple honeymooned in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and will reside in Stephenville, TX.

The Central Texas Electric Cooperative (CTEC) annual membership meeting began on an unseasonably cool August afternoon in Mason. The membership, enjoying the 80-degree weather, flooded the Mason High School auditorium to elect three directors, hear the annual report and try their chances at winning a few door prizes from CTEC and its vendors and suppliers. CEO Bob Loth welcomed the members.

Todd and LaJoy Amthor are pleased to announce the birth of their second baby girl. Perry Katheryne was born on March 16, 2008 at 5:51 a.m. at Round Rock Medical Center. She weighed 7 lbs, 11 ozs and measured 19 1/2 inches long. She is welcomed by big sister, Isabella.

The members of “His Helping Hands” have been busy “Working together for the glory of our Lord.” They had an exciting day Friday, August 22 presenting their donation to the Senior Citizens Center. Each child has been working extra hard the last couple of months to earn money for the fund raiser.

Sharla Ann McWilliams and Scott Alan Letbetter Jr., both of Philadelphia, were married June 20, 2008, at the Moon Palace Resort in Riviera Maya, Mexico. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael McWilliams and Debbie McWilliams. The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Scott Letbetter Sr.

The Heart of Texas Regional Today's Girls will have a booth at the upcoming Trades Day on Saturday, September 6th, to collect donations of cash or gift cards for the Cummings family of Mineola, Texas, who recently lost everything in a house fire. Carley Cummings has participated at the local, state, and national levels of competition since the program was formed.

Some children love to hate vegetables much to the chagrin of their parents. This can present a challenge in meeting the daily 2 ½ cups of vegetables recommended by MyPyramid for Kids. Parents need not loose heart. “It’s important to keep offering vegetables to children,” says Dr. Sharon Robinson, a Registered Dietitian with Texas Cooperative Extension.

The 2008-2009 school year at Richland Springs began August 25th. Thanks to the teachers and staff and students, we had a great first week of school, registering 141 students in grades kindergarten -12. The Coyote Booster Club is hosting the Coyote Classic again this year. The Coyotes opening football game is at home on Friday, August 29th at 7:00 p.m.

Several times over the years, we have had a foul strange odor in our kitchen. We start looking in the cabinets and under the dishwasher or under the refrigerator. Often, by the time we found it, the odor would be so strong you would want to leave the house. I have wanted to put a clothespin on my nose before removing the pots and pans.

It has rained off and on for the past week although the rain showers have been very scattered. I haven’t heard just how much we have received at Elm Grove but everything seems to be nice and green. I am behind on my rainfall reports because I was gone all last week.

Wow, what a short, hot summer! Much has happened since May 30, 2008, the end of the last school year. SSISD staff have worked hard all summer to prepare for a successful start of the 2008-2009 school year. Monday, August 25 was the first day of classes. The most evident change in this school year is the school start time.

Are you weary from the daily drudgery of work at the office or from keeping house? Are you laden with care, financial or otherwise? Do you have a heavy heart or a burdened conscience? Jesus Christ says to you, "Come to me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.

The rain came down Saturday fast and furious leaving over an inch of rain in places around the Bend. Just seven tenths of rain fell at William Clark’s place. Rain has been hopscotching around and at different times the down pour is heavy and other places it will just be a small amount.

All these lovely showers have turned the area spring green. What a refreshing sight! It’s just like a good sermon; you come out refreshed, and ready to take on the world again. Our prayers are with Bev Cohn, the ambulance came to get her Sunday and took her to Brownwood. She is a breath of sunshine in our church, so we really need her to get well soon.

When you were a teenager your parents didn’t have to know about marijuana. But when you’re raising a teenager here in the U.S. today, it’s critical. Kids who are not regularly monitored by their parents are four times more likely to use drugs. Your kids are growing up in a different generation and culture.

Louis Flores, 48, of Huntsville, AL, passed away Sunday, August 17, 2008 in Huntsville. Born June 26, 1960 in San Saba, he was the son of Adolfo and Teckla Flores. Louis was retired from the U.S. Army and was a general engineer for military training for 3 Northrop Grumman. Louis is survived by his father, Adolfo Flores of San Saba; his wife, Linda Flores, and two sons, Luis Esteban Flores and Lionel Eugene Flores, all of Huntsville, AL; six brothers: Gilbert Flores and his wife, Lupe, of San Saba; Ruben Flores of San Saba; Adolfo Flores Jr.
