The Cherokee Independent School District will hold trustee elections on November 4, 2008 in conjunction with the general election. This is a new requirement passed by the legislature and signed by the Governor during the third special session of the 79th legislature under provisions of House Bill 1. In House Bill 1, Article 11 school districts are required to hold a joint election with either a municipality in which their district resides or during the general election for state and county officials.Cherokee ISD does not reside in any municipality (city) therefore, is required to hold their election each even-numbered year.

Following a short closure, the Agape House has opened with a new name - Shared Blessings. Volunteers have worked hard remodeling the inside of the building by opening up some interior walls, updating the lighting, and adding new flooring and signage. The group hopes to give a face-lift to the exterior as soon as possible. The former Agape House was a non-profit clothing outreach that offered donated clothes, as well as housewares, at minimal prices.

In conjunction with the Pecan Capital Trade Days in nearby San Saba, Alamosa Wine Cellars of Bend will hold a grape stomp at the winery on September 6th from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors are invited to tour the winery and get into the harvest spirit by experiencing the old world way of crushing grapes - the grape stomp.

If you are a Middle School student new to this District and have not registered for school yet, please come by the Middle School this week and register so that you will be ready for the first day of school. If you can't come by before the first day of classes, you need to come to the Middle School at 7:30 a.m.

The San Saba Armadillos started playing their 2008 football season scrimmaging against Junction on Saturday, August 16, 2008. San Saba All-Sports Booster Club sponsored a Fall sports ‘Meet The Dillos’ along with this scrimmage. All Varsity football players, JV football players, student trainers, coaches, cheerleaders, drill team members, drum majors and cross country runners were introduced.

Seaman Recruit Joseph William Cox graduated from the US Navy Great Lakes Naval Training Station on August 1, 2008. Cox, a 2006 graduate of San Saba High School, was trained in Division 269, which achieved Hall of Fame status. The Navy has only one location for boot camp: The Great Lakes Naval Training Center, which is located on the western shore of Lake Michigan, halfway between Chicago and Milwaukee.

Frank Zapata IV graduated from the Navy Seal Team on June 20, 2008. He and his wife, Tara Ratliff, have a daughter named Imie. Frank is the son of Frank and Kathy Zapata, and grandson of Frank and Elodia Zapata and Fletcher and Yoko Lackey.

Michael A. Hardy was awarded a Master of Science degree in Earth and Environmental Sciences from the University of Texas at San Antonio-2008 summer session. Hardy did his undergraduate work at Angelo State University in San Angelo, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in May of 2002. He will begin work on his doctorate at Montclair State University in New Jersey this fall. Mr.

Thursday, August 28th, is the date for Fellowship of Christian Women’s Luncheon at the First Presbyterian Church in San Saba. We will gather in the basement fellowship hall for a Harvest Fruits and Veggies meal together. “Super Saturday in Cherokee” plans are underway to get an arts and crafts fair started in Cherokee. So set aside Saturday, October 18th, to participate or attend the first annual or bi-annual event. There are many local artisans and crafters that don’t get the publicity they need. Cherokee isn’t too small to grow into something that will make people want to join or visit us on special days.

Were you able to see the opening ceremonies of the Olympics in China? What a spectacular performance was put on. Did you notice the beauty of the costumes, buildings and the fireworks. They did a wonderful job of presenting China to the world. At the end of the ceremonies came the parade of athletes.

The San Saba Ladies Golf Association met August 14, 2008 for play day with the continuation of the quest for the Little-Low Cup featuring the Solheim play. The Chair for the event, Sandee Hartley, called for a game of partnership low ball at match play. Anita Miles and Jo Anne Hardy defeated Sandee Hartley and Becky Hardin to earn a point each and Hattie Rogers and Jo Ann Snow defeated Bobbie Churchill and Dorothy Sterner for a point each.

It is very much sought after and the most prestigious award you can receive in the sports world. It started in ancient Greece before 776 BC. At first it was just foot races but over the years many other events have been included to where there over 28 different sports and over 300 events. It is amazing to watch those young athletics that have trained and worked so hard for years just to stand in that winner’s circle to receive that very prestigious reward.

Praise God for the wonderful rain we received on Saturday and Monday! Saturday morning I announced gloomily that the rain had passed us by yet again. Then glory of all glories the rain arrived! We had over two inches in the gauge by Monday evening. I’ll bet happy little rain songs were winging their way around the county! I received a delighted call from Gene Woods; he heard from Ruth Glaze and they had a grand time reminiscing over the phone.

Judy Carney Grumbles, 64, of San Saba, passed away Thursday, August 14, 2008 at the Scott and White Hospital in Temple, Texas. She was born July 24, 1944, in Baytown, Texas, the daughter of William Carney and Lura Shanks Carney. She is survived by her husband, Glenn Grumbles, of San Saba; two brothers: Terry Jack Scarborough and his wife, Pat, of Humble, Texas; and Tracey Scarborough and his wife, Lana, of Tom Ball, Texas; one sister, Kay Bayard, of Baytown, Texas; one aunt, Babe Weaver, of Baytown, Texas; and several nieces and nephews, which include Gail Sloan of San Saba. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Janet Goode. Graveside services were held Monday, August 18, 2008 at the Adams Cemetery in San Saba County, with Rev.

Mable Ruth (Mackie) Towerton passed away Friday, May 30, 2008 in Keene, Texas. Services were held June 4, 2008 in Keene Texas. She was buried in the Keene Cemetery. William E. Bodie, 88, of Indian Gap passed away Sunday, August 17, 2008 in Hamilton, Texas. He was born September 21, 1919, in Newberry South Carolina, the son of Josiah W. Bodie and Mary Bright Bodie. William served with the United States Army during World War II and later worked for the railroad as a foreman of engines.
