School & Sports

Monday morning the University Interscholastic League announced the biennial reclassification and realignment. The schools were grouped by enrollment numbers turned into the UIL in October 2009. San Saba turned in an enrollment of 203. Based on the numbers from the previous realignment, this meant the Armadillos could be either a large 1A or small 2A school. Either way, many knew there would be long road games involved.

The superintendents in both classes voted to split the classes into large school and small school divisions for football only. Splitting the schools means that they would play district games against schools closer to their own size. Many people expected San Saba to drop to 1A because of the closeness to the cutoff of 200 from the previous alignment and that the UIL usually increases the cutoff by 5-10 each time.

When the realignment was announced many were surprised that the Armadillos stayed 2A and the cutoff stayed at 200. For San Saba, this meant that the only team from the old district that they might play is the Coleman Bluecats.

This is exactly what happened. Gone are Brady, Bangs, Early, Comanche and Dublin. All of them are Division 1 big schools. Joining San Saba and Coleman in the new District 13, Division 2 are 3 newcomers to San Saba football and someone that has not been in the district with the Armadillos since 1997. The new schools are Harper Longhorns, Ozona Lions and Sonora Broncos and rejoining the district is the Junction Eagles. District 13 is part of Region IV and San Saba has been in Region I for the past several realignments. Non-district opponents are not to be finalized until the appeals process is completed in 3 weeks.

Because the superintendent vote only applied to football, the UIL also had to reform the schools into separate basketball districts. San Saba was put in District 6. It is very similar to the district the Armadillos currently have. The only changes are the Brady Bulldogs are gone and the Hamilton Bulldogs and Hico Tigers have joined the district.
