The San Saba Lady Dillos welcomed the Thanksgiving Break with two nice wins to start off the holidays. We defeated Llano 47-37 on Monday and downed the Cowgirls of Mason 52-30 on Tuesday. I could tell real quick that the Llano game was going to be a “grinder”.

Not to make excuses for us but I could tell we were not our “crisp” self to start off the game and that was probably due to playing four games in three days but in saying that Llano had played four games just like us in the Marble Falls Tournament the previous weekend so like I told the girls we can throw the “we’re tired theory” out the window because they were in the same boat as us.

Llano did a good job of controlling tempo and tried the make the game a halfcourt one. We forced a few turnovers but one good thing out of this game was our ability to defend in the halfcourt setting.

We were only up four at halftime, 23-19 but we had a good third quarter and ended the stanza up 36-26.

Shelby Hardy had a big night at the freethrow line going 10 for 16. Haylee Oliver lead all scorers with 17 followed by Hardy with 15. Katy Davis chipped in 6 points and Nicole Sears added 5.

Hardy lead in the theft department with 5 while Calea Turner and Nicole Sears also recorded 3 steals each. Haylee Oliver collected 7 rebounds and Katy Davis also had 6 boards as well.

The Mason game was a bit like the Llano one in the first half. We did a great job of pressuring their guards and causing turnovers but it seemed like we could never get a rhythm going and the Cowgirls “hung around” longer than we wanted. We were up two at halftime, 22-20 but we got things going in the third quarter and pushed the lead to nine at 38-29.

Our pressure really made a difference in the fourth quarter as we outscored the visitors from Mason County fourteen to one and sealed the win 52-30.

All of our guards (Tarah Crosby, Calea Turner, Shelby Hardy, Bianca Zepeda, and Danessa Vasquez) did a GREAT job of pressuring the Mason guards.

We gave up some easy buckets early but the more the game wore on our pressure became a problem for the Cowgirls.

Haylee Oliver lead all scorers with 18 followed by Katy Davis with 10. Shelby Hardy added 9 points and Calea Turner netted 7 as well.

Calea Turner had 6 steals followed by Katy Davis with 5 and Haylee Oliver and Tarah Crosby each added 4 steals as well. Haylee Oliver was our leading rebounder with 8 boards. Shelby Hardy and Tarah Crosby each recorded 4 assists for the Lady Dillos.

Our JV Lady Dillos recored two wins as well to improve their record to 5-2 on the year. We downed Llano 28-15 on Monday and headed to the Holidays with a 29-25 win over the Cowgirls of Mason. Samantha Henry had a big night in both games leading the Jeevers in scoring. Ashley Pulatie did a great job of playing under control and running the offense.

Silvia “Chiva” Jimenez played great defense along with Paige Chambers, Paige Faught, Taylor Smith and Rebecca Paredes.

Mallory Ramos also came off the bench and hit some big shots in the Mason game to help preserve the win. A great job by all team members and Coach Stowe. Well done ladies.

We will have played Johnson City on Tuesday when the paper comes out so hopefully we played well after a five day layoff but we needed the rest so hopefully we’re recharged and “rar’in” to go for the week.

The Varsity travels to Burnet for their second tournament of the year. The tournament is only on FRIDAY and SATURDAY.

We play two games on Friday, we open up with Austin LBJ at 10:30 a.m. on Friday. If we win we will play at 4:30 p.m. and if we lose we play at 3:00 p.m. on that same day as well versus the winner or loser of Round Rock Westwood/Fredericksburg.

Come out and support all of our teams from middle school to high school. It really helps hearing you guys encourage our teams.

Be the best 6th man in the Hill Country for us. We hope you all had a blessed Thanksgiving and that you didn’t eat too much. Hang in there Jordan, we’re still thinking about you and pulling for you. You’re a KEEPER my man!!
