The Daughters of the Republic of Texas, San Saba River Chapter gather to dedicate a Memorial Marker for James Thomas Christian, a citizen of the Republic of Texas, (1836 to 19 February 1846).

Patsy Stewart began the ceremony with the invocation followed by the Boy Scouts of America, San Saba Troop #55, presenting the colors and leading in the pledge to the United States Flag and the Texas flag.

Chapter President Louise Sanders gave the Welcome and Introduction and the Call to Remember. Aileen Roberts gave the Biographical Sketch of the citizen’s life and times.

James Thomas Christian was born in Bastrop County in 1843, making him a citizen of the Republic of Texas. His grandparents were Thomas Christian and Mary Burleson Christian who arrived in Texas with Stephen Austin’s Little Colony in the early 1830’s Thomas Christian received a headright where the city of Elgin is now located. James entered the service of the Confederacy in the autumn of 1861 and served until April 1865. He served with the 33rd Texas Calvary C.S.A. His record was that of a brave and faithful Confederate soldier.

James Thomas married Harriet Catherine Avery while living in Bastrop County. She was the daughter of Willis Avery and Elzina Weeks Avery. They were pioneers of Williamson County. Willis Avery fought at the battle of San Jacinto, and he and his wife are buried in the State Cemetery in Austin, Texas, in the Pioneers of Texas Section. James Thomas Christian and Harriet settled in Richland Springs after arriving in San Saba County.

James started ranching and over the years acquired a considerable holding of land. Their home was located several miles out the old Brady Road.

The marker was unveiled by Evelyn Horseman, his granddaughter, and Aileen Roberts. Patsy Stewart gave the benediction and the group made a procession to the grave of Evelyn Lucille Wheeler Christian for a Chapter Memorial Service for a Daughter of the Republic of Texas.
