The San Saba ISD Board of Trustees met for a regular board meeting on Monday, October 13th at 7 p.m. President Darrin Barker called the meeting to order followed by the invocation and the pledges to the American and Texas flags. There were no Public Comments.

Bradley Cummins made a presentation of his 20 day trip which the Board of Trustees supported him with $1,000. Bradley showed pictures of Athens, Crete, Greece, and Rome. Special comments were made showing the site of the first Olympics where a torch is lit. Bradley will be eligible for a 20 day trip next year to Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. He ended his presentation by thanking the Board for this opportunity of a lifetime.

Superintendent Leigh Ann Glaze gave the following Communications:

* Two buses were taken to an auction and the check is in the mail for both buses.

* A team of auditors from Fredericksburg will be on site starting Oct. 27th for the annual audit.

* Open House for all three campuses is Monday Oct. 20th. There will be an ad in The San Saba News & Star this week and also information will be sent home with students.

*Planning and decision making will be necessary as a result of the report of the site-based decision making team report.

* The Texas Educator Excellence Grant has been completed. The Elementary will be awarded $45,000 and the Middle School will also receive $45,000.

The Board discussed and appoved the following consent Agenda:

Minutes of the September 15th meeting; Recorded Special Board Meeting of the Facility Study Presentation September 30th; Amended the 2008-2009 Budget as needed; Allow and pay bills; and Financial Report.

Assistant Superintendent Ashley Stewart reported that the following programs are being implemented: Skills Benchmark, Grand Central Station; Task Benchmark and Worth The Wait.

High School Principal Mr. Underwood reported the following events: Band contest in Brady this Saturday; Monday, Open House; Tuesday, College Night; Retests are in progress; Friday will be Lock Down for Seniors; Bus Evacuation Drill. There are 214 High School students; 48 Freshmen, 52 Sophmores, 58 Juniors and 56 Seniors. Student incentives and outstanding teachers awards are in progress monthly and high school is going well, with many activities and football being the leading sport at this time.

Elementary Principal Mr. Tabor’s report included: Current enrollment 283; five students will be a part of the GCS program; Individual and group Skills Assesments completed; First Benchmark Assessments completed; Teachers and students are getting ready for Open House Monday.

The Middle School Principal Mr. Pannell’s report included: Bus Evacuation drill; enrollment of 212 consisting of 50 in the Fifth grade, 52 in the Sixth grade, 53 in the Seventh grade, 57 in the eigth grade; Learning Lab is being implemented; Benchmarks; Worth The Wait; The All Stars program, by Missy King, will start on Tuesday for 14 weeks; student recognition; two buses will visit the Middle School, High School, Nursing Home, Court House, etc. on Friday, Oct. 31st for the Costume Parade that will be fun for all.

Athletic Director Johnson reported that the football coaches and teams are working hard at football practice and during games. Three football players are out because of failing grades. However, there has been around six fairly serious injuries with one player out for four weeks. Girls Basketball will start October 22nd and District Cross Country the month of October. There are weather related problems with the new scoreboard and new parts will be needed. Coach Shay Easterwood is implementing the important Fellowship of Christian Athletes Program.

New Business included:

1. Superintendent Glaze has received two price quotes for dirt work project on lots at 106-108 North 5th Street by Rogan Field. The Board approved the decision for Glaze to select the best bid with one member abstaining.

2. The committee of Darren Barker, Susie Nettleship and Kim Kirk were appointed to meet with Superintendent Glaze to study the facility plan.

3. The Board will establilsh a citizen’s committee to study facility planning.

The Principals gave their report packets for Campus Improvement Plans that included curriculum, state programs, document changes, objectives for the year, main concerns and safety issues.

President Barker adjourned the meeting and there were no matters for a closed session. Those attending the meeting were: Superintendent Leigh Ann Glaze; Assistant Superintendent Ashley Stewart; Secretary Bob Whitten; President Darren Barker; Vice President Marcey Maxcey; Board Members Elmo Davis, Susie Nettleship, Angela Johnson and Kim Kirk; Principals Mr. Underwood, Mr. Tabor and Mr. Pannell; Athletic Director Johnson; Jackie Dyer, Superintendent’s Secretary; and San Saba News & Star Reporter Alice Smith.
