Most of the folks around our parts have been very pleased with the cooler mornings, however, we’re still looking forward to that next rain. As this meager offering is in the process of being penned, tomorrow will be the 1st day of the 10th month, and most of the County is in dire straights due to drought. Even the parts that received some rain back about 3 weeks past are pretty well parched at present. Our part of the country is feeling fairly well neglected now-days regarding rain. You see, the hurricanes that appeared headed for the Hill Country turned north a bit prematurely, and the outer rim of rain didn’t even reach us. Heck, I heard earlier in the week that the last one wandered off and went in up around Maine. Their comment was that it wasn’t even as bad as a normal “Nor-easter,” albeit the snow. One might conclude that the weather has started to mimic our politicians as of late; They seem to promise a lot, while delivering little. Neither one exhibiting much dependability.
While speaking of politics, activity surely picked up on the Washington scene early in the week. We can hardly recall ever having so much finger pointin’ & laying the blame elsewhere. I don’t see any of those yokels wanting to stand up and say “ I did it & this is why.” I usually don’t care to take sides politically in print, so I think it would be wise to go back in time with quoting one of our most wise political pundits whose comments are still appropriate, even in this day & time and he was a Country boy to boot.
In relation to Congress getting a raise in pay he quipped, “The principal bad feature is that it will make more men want to hold office, and once a man wants to hold a public office he is absolutely no good for honest work”. He also added, “ You can’t believe a thing you read in regard to official’s statements. The minute anything happens with official life, it's just like a cold night, everybody is trying to cover up.” The clincher might be as follows: “We have the best Congress that money can buy.” All by Will Rogers, 1879-1935.
While looking at my outline notes for last week’s edition of “Highlights,” there were some scribblings at the bottom regarding all my favorite football teams losing, with only the Cowboys staying in the win column. It would be safe to suffice that the tables were truly turned this past weekend. I’m also reasonably assured that the Aggies will not be leaving Stillwater with a warm feeling this coming Saturday.
Looking at the farm & ranch scene, I was recently reminded by a couple of premier Hereford breeders this morning as they banged on the door that we have an outstanding Hereford sale out at the Harkeyville Auction this Thursday, Oct. 2. Dale Barber and one of his Hereford partners, Don Moller, came down from Channing to get the cattle all lined out for the Sale with Jordan’s. Looking at the sale list, it appears that they will be offering over 70 lots for the Auction, with the last 4 lots being about 100 bred heifers in selected groups. Barber Ranch and partners have some of the top Herefords in the Country and one would be doing themselves a favor if you only went out to look. The top side of that would be getting to eat out with some of the best cooks in this part of the State, as well. Looks like the sale will start about 11:30 before lunch.
Looking at the birthday list, several of us gathered over at Daddy’s Tues. evening to help him celebrate another Birthday. Michelle & her kids brought over some good stuff for supper and Lady Z & yrs. Truly added to the take as well. He gets to celebrate over a period of several days as Will is coming in this weekend to grill him a steak or two and some of Audrey’s bunch is planning on making it down from Ft. Worth. I usually don’t print someone’s age when I’m talking of Birthdays, but if my history is correct, I think Prof. Woodrow Wilson was President when Daddy was born. You can also give Jimmy Don a call on Fri., the 3rd and give him a Birthday holler. Other than that, the Mayor & yrs.truly will be trying to keep a lid on things out around———Harkeyville!!!!!
