Looks like we finally made it into September, & this one is surely looking forward to the 1st Norther or cool spell.
Not that we really need an excuse for the first pot of Chili for the season, but it seems to coincide with cooler temps. Somewhat better. The weather is always a major topic of discussion around country coffee tables, but the big weather scene has really taken center stage the past week or so.
We finally got Gustav to make landfall down in the Bayou country about mid-morning on Labor Day. The winds had weakened and maybe the rainfall in all of the area concerned will be controllable.
I’m still somewhat short of amazed that folks will continue to live down in an area that’s always a mere two inches away from flooding, even in dry years.
If you might have ever had the opportunity to travel down Hwy. 1 on the way to Grand Isle, down Bayou Lafourche, you’d have pretty good idea of what we’re referring to.
Looks like the Labor Day weekend came & went with little fan-fare, what with most folks keeping an eye on the hurricane situation, as well as the opening weekend of Dove season and Fall football games.
The Armadillo B-team (they say JV, now-days) held up the local banner about as well as anyone, with the Varsity making it close, but not quite in the W- column with the Bearcats of De Leon.
The Coyotes of Richland seemed to not have missed a beat from last season’s success, while the Indians of Cherokee were not so fortunate. The local football facts seem a lot more interesting to many of us this week as we’d rather not be talking of the Aggies.
Richard Barker, Bumpy Amthor, Dick Miller, B. Whitten, and R.D. Adams (yrs. Truly, included) will have little to say on the subject this week. I remember the Ags losing a ballgame to a small school from Louisiana a few years back, but at least we’d heard of them & their home town.
I don’t even know where Jonesboro might be in Ark. sounds like some place the Dallas Cowboys might own. Anyhow, if we have trouble winning at College Sat. with a team like Ark. State, no tellin’ what we might look forward to in Albuquerque. As if that’s not enough, then we get Miami and Army back at home. I’d have to offer that Baylor is even looming large for the Aggies in mid-November. Oh, well, we can always go watch Richland Springs.
The advent of bird season came in rather quietly this past Monday, as the 1st day being on Labor Day, many of the hunters were on their way home instead of banging at the birds.
Several of the more avid hunters have been scouting and monitoring flights & feeding areas for the past couple of weeks, but some showers around the County seemed to have scattered a lot of the Doves.
We did see a good number of folks around the stores & cafes all decked out in their Camo clothing, but Shaw, Barker, & yrs. Truly didn’t seem to hear as much shooting as most opening days.
Several of us gathered out around Trussell Lake on Monday afternoon with all six hunters garnering a bit over one shooters bag limit. I usually put a recipe for Doves in the “News” around this time each year, but might have to put it off until next week to allow hunters time to get enough of the tasty birds in the cooler to fill the full recipe of 8 or so birds. Anyhow, with all that allowed, guess the Mayor & yrs. Truly will try to keep an eye on the situation out around———————Harkeyville!!!!!!!
