Parents, guardians and caregivers….. one of the most important things that you can do for your child and for your school is to have that child attend school each and every day.

Daily attendance is important for the student so that he/she will receive as much instruction and participate in learning as possible. Missed student days means missed opportunities to learn and gain as much knowledge as possible.

What does daily attendance mean to the school? Daily attendance means funding for educational programs and operations. The major driver in school funding is daily student attendance, thus it is very important to support your student and your school district by having students in school each and every day.

Let’s review the attendance policies that drive the educational system in Texas. Compulsory attendance applies to students who are at least six years old as of September 1 of the applicable school year. The law requires a student to attend public school until the student’s 18th birthday, unless the student is exempt under a particular attendance law. Compulsory attendance applies to certain extended year programs, tutorial classes, accelerated reading instruction programs and other programs where the student is required to come for additional instructional time as identified by campus staff.

Furthermore, compulsory attendance applies to students below the age of 6 during any period that the student is voluntarily enrolled in pre-kindergarten or kindergarten. Students are required to attend 90% of the days that school is in session.

If students do not meet this requirement regardless of the reason for the absences, the student may be held back in the current grade level or denied credit for the school year. Let’s shoot for a 98% attendance rate for the 2008-2009 school year!
