September 3, 1908
G.B. Shoemake is hauling the material out this week to repair the Eagle Ford bridge at Bend and also for the construction of the Wallace Creek bridge.
Sam Moore went to Brady last Friday to play ball a few days with that team. Moore pitches a clean good game and his services are in demand. There are few amateur players his equal.
Miss Nila Kuykendall arrived at home last Saturday. She has been spending the summer with a party of her college teachers and friends touring Europe, visiting most of the countries and historic scenes of continental Europe and the British Isles.
J.H. Woodall, one of the substantial farmers of the Locker community, was attending the Farmers Union mass meeting Tuesday.
Perry Crawford was in from the Holt section Wednesday. He is an optimist and says crops are good in his part of the county. Cotton was made late on account of the hailstorm last spring, but he expects a fine yield.

The San Saba Junior Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring its first "Monthly Trades Day" Monday, September 12th, in the form of a "Dollar Day," when 24 stores of this city are cooperating with the Junior Chamber by offering some very special bargains for that day.
Santa Fe Agent Harry Wayland said Monday that arrangements are being made for a Santa Fe special train to carry San Saba football fans to and from the Belton game on Friday, September 23rd, when the Armadillos play their second major game this season. A special low round trip rate of $1.40 has been made for the trip to and from Belton.
The Corps of Army Engineers, who have been here making flood control surveys throughout the San Saba River watershed since the middle of July, are still busily engaged in their labors. A force of 12 persons are engaged in this work here, including the office staff.
Preliminary work on the construction of five and a fraction miles of flexible base road on Highway 81, north from the Llano County line, began the forepart of this week when a caliche pit on the O.B. Altizer place near Cherokee was being opened.

A very large crowd attended Locker Homecoming on August 24th. Some came from California and Arkansas. The day was made more pleasant by two air-conditioners, courtesy of Thompson Surplus of Brownwood. Nelson Churchwell of Brownwood sold drinks. O.W. Taylor and Earl Parks were re-elected Chairman and Secretary-Treasurer. Some funds were collected for work on the cemetery. Among the old-timers were Mrs. Dave O'Neal, Mrs. Donna Taylor, Mrs. Ada Collins, A.J. and Marion Reavis, Jim Currie, and others.
The San Saba County Commissioners Court will hold a hearing of the county budget, announced Warden Terry, County Judge. The hearing will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, September 12th, in the Commissioners' Court room. The budget for the year will be explained. Every taxpayer is invited to attend the public hearing of the county budget.
San Saba County's pecan crop is expected to be half the amount of last year's production. The reduction is due to casebearer damage and leaf worm damage three times this season.
