On January 12, 2012, the Pierian Study Club met at the home of Connie Adams. Co-hostesses for the meeting were Martine Miller, Geanne Taylor, Martha Leigh Whitten and Bebe Bagley, committee chair. Other members present were Donna Baker, Paula Barrier, Loy Nell Behrens, Gail Bruner, Sharon Clawson, Jeri Jones, Sandy Kuykendall, Cherry Kay Lange, Joycelyn McRorey, Kay Nettleship, Clione Rochat, Debbie Shahan, Patty Shaw, Linda Sloan, Vickie Stevenson, Patricia Warren, Rebecca Whitley, Louise Williams, Anna Wilson, Bebe Faught, Betty Jo Miller, and Martha Roe Terry.Mrs. Adams graciously welcomed guests as co-hostesses served Galette de Rois, Twelfth Night Cake, a traditional French dessert made of puff pastry and almond. In France, the cake is served on the Twelfth Day of Christmas, or Epiphany, which marks the arrival of the three kings to Bethlehem to worship the Christ Child. The cake, prepared by co-hostess, Martine Miller, contained a prize. Tradition states that the one who finds the prize is then declared king or queen for the day. Queen for the Day and prize winner for the Pierian Study Club was Gail Bruner, who was presented a crown and a hearty round of applause from her sister club members. The Twelfth Night Cake was served with whipped cream and sides of dark chocolate candies and assorted flavored pecans with a choice of coffee and iced water.Kay Nettleship, Second Vice President, in lieu of the absences of Kathleen Hawkins, President, and Anita Miles, First Vice President, called the meeting to order. Rebecca Whitley then led members in the Club Collect. Vickie Stevenson introduced the program for the day, Karaoke Fun with Elaine Canney, an accomplished vocalist from the Kingsland area. Mrs. Canney opened her program of country and western ballads with the Patsy Cline classic, Crazy. She continued with other traditional country and western hits such as I Can’t Stop Loving You, Please Release Me, Tennessee Waltz, and Make the World Go Away. In closing, Mrs. Canney performed the immortal Kitty Wells classic, It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels and Vern Gosden’s, Is It Raining at Your House. At the close of the program, Mrs. Canney was presented a gift basket of candied pecans on behalf of the club’s membership.Patty Shaw, Corresponding Secretary, continued with the business section of the meeting by calling on Rebecca Whitley, in lieu of the absent Sandy Smith, club secretary, for roll call and the reading of the minutes. The minutes for the November meeting and the December Guest Tea were approved as read.Joycelyn McRorey gave the monthly financial report for the absent Treasurer, Louise Williams. Clione Rochat, Gifts-Cards-Flowers Chair, stated that their committee had sent the appropriate cards to ailing members, Barbara Gilger, Ella Burton-Pavich, and husband of member Suzie Nettleship, Clay. Congratulatory cards had also been sent to members, Brooke Bagley, on the recent birth of her child, and to Sandy Smith, on the birth of her twin granddaughters. With no other club reports to be made, or any unfinished business or new business to attend to, the meeting was adjourned. In closing, Mrs. Shaw thanked Mrs. Adams along with her co-hostesses for their time and preparations. It was then announced that the next meeting of the Pierian Study Club will be on February 9th beginning at 3:00 p.m. in the home of Cherry Kay Lange. Co-hostesses for the February meeting will be Anita Miles, Ann Allison and Barbara Gilger, Committee Chair.
