50 years ago - January 21, 1960

Since November 1, Jim Warner, the government trapper, has caught three wolves, one bobcat, 12 red fox and 33 gray fox. These animals were trapped in the vicinity of Cat Claw community, Cherokee and Locker.

Judge Thomas C. Ferguson presided at court here last Friday, January 15, when two civil cases were heard. One divorce was granted and one judgment on note was granted. Mrs. Ferguson accompanied her husband to San Saba Friday.

Ground was broken last week and the foundation was being prepared for the new West Side Church of Christ building at the location on West Wallace Street in Laurel Heights - The building will be 34 feet by 70 feet, a one story structure, and will be made of Heydite tile and brick.

Mrs. Barclay, who has been Avon representative of Richland Springs for the past three years, has resigned. She returned with her husband Sunday to Carlsbad, where they will work at the State Sanitorium.

In a letter to the News editor received yesterday from Senator Houghton Brownlee, it was intimated that if citizens of San Saba county will get back of the project wholeheartedly, for the completion of the road from San Saba to Brady, he believed he could help us have this included as a part of the Federal military highway program.

The State Health Department of Texas, Tuesday recommended that San Saba take immediate steps to acquire a better source of water supply for human consumption.

It is with pleasure that we can state to the citizens of San Saba that our commissioners are, upon their advice, immediately securing the services of a competent water engineer, to make the necessary changes as soon as possible.

100 years ago - February 3, 1910

W.T. Colburn had the misfortune to lose his barn by fire Monday night. All his feed, harness and many farm tools were destroyed.

T.J. Matlock, county lecturer for the Farmers' Union, will speak at Live Oak Thursday night, Pecan Grove Friday night, and Locker Saturday night.

The contract for the railroad has been let, now stand aside and watch San Saba grow.

Riser Mauldin, the merchant prince of Locker, was interviewing the tax-collector and attending to other business in San Saba last Thursday. He has prospered since going into business at Locker and says the farmers in that section are well along with preparations for another crop.

Just let the Santa Fe get ready to run its first long train into San Saba during the big fair this summer, we can entertain them on the fair grounds.

W.A. Ashley, one of Cherokee's successful stockmen, was in San Saba Saturday. He was looking for some cattle.
