San Saba, Texas

Howdy,

The second of February is a very important day for TEXAS and the United States, and it is not because of Ground Hog's Day. On 2-2-1848, the TREATY of GUADALUPE-HIDALGO was signed. This ended The MEXICAN WAR.

On 4-21-1836, TEXAS defeated Mexico in a battle that lasted only eighteen minutes. That was the BATTLE of SAN JACINTO. To save his life, General Santa Anna agreed to never lead an army against TEXAS. SION "SI" BOSTICK, who is buried in the SAN SABA CEMETERY, fought in the BATTLE of SAN JACINTO.

Santa Anna recognized the NUECES RIVER as the Texas-Mexico Border. TEXAS and the United States considered the RIO GRANDE RIVER as the border. Santa Anna and his army crossed the RIO GRANDE RIVER and killed approximately sixty American soldiers. This caused PRESIDENT JAMES K. POLK to declare was against Mexico. CONGRESSMAN ABRAHAM LINCOLN was the lone congressional vote against the war.

More future Presidents fought in the MEXICAN WAR than in any other war. This war was the main thing that got ZACHARY TAYLOR elected President in 1848. PRESIDENT TAYLOR died while in office. Many believe he was poisoned.

America's victory in the MEXICAN WAR established the RIO GRANDE RIVER as the Texas-Mexico Border. The United States also acquired land that became the states of New Mexico, Arizona, California and others. Yes, the TREATY of GUADALUPE-HIDALGO was very important to TEXAS and the United States. Have a HAPPY TREATY of GUADALUPE-HIDALGO DAY on the second of February.

Serving God With You,

Tom Bowden
