Sorry about last week, about 10 p.m. last Monday I realized that I didn’t write our article so sorry sports fans!!! Since our last article we have played Hico, Brady, and Early. We played Hico and Brady over the Holidays and then played Early last Tuesday in a big 8-2A District ballgame. We played Hico after being off for nine days and man did we look rusty. I don’t know if I’ll ever do that again. One practice might have helped us a bit but regardless we were able to pull out a win. We had 26 turnovers for the game including 9 in the first quarter and somehow pulled out a 59-54 victory. Hico has two really nice guards named Stegall and Finstad and they really shot the ball well for them. Nessa Vasquez hit a "Hail Mary" to end the second quarter which seemed to give us a bit of a lift. We were down 9-0 to start the game but to the girls’ credit they kept battling and we pulled out a very rugged looking game. Haylee Oliver had a huge night in the rebounding department snagging 16 rebounds. Johna Reavis and Karlee Cromer had big nights rebounding on the offensive end as well as they garnered 5 and 4 respectively. Haylee Oliver lead us in scoring with 14 followed by Nessa Vasquez with 13. Haylee and Tarah Crosby also added 4 assists apiece and Haylee had 4 steals and Nicole Sears 3 in the theft department.

Following the Hico affair we had two great days of practice and we did a "little" cardiovascular work to get Christmas out of our system. We played Brady on Saturday Jan. 2 and had all cylinders firing to start the game. We scored 28 points in the first quarter and had a 28-2 lead after one stanza. We netted 16 points in the second quarter and had a commanding 44-7 lead at halftime. Everyone received good minutes which is what you need after a long layoff and I was really encouraged by our outside shooting. Ashley Pulatie had a big game as she hit three 3 pointers. Nessa and Nicole also chipped in 6 each. The final score ended up 61-21. Haylee Oliver lead us in rebounding with 11 and she also had 6 assists. Nessa Vasquez also added 4 assists for the Lady Dillos. Nessa and Nicole lead us in the theft department with 2 each. Haylee lead us in scoring with 32 points. Karlee Cromer also took her second CHARGE of the year which I love on the defensive end and is now our leader with two CHARGE CARDS which are redeemable at all Dillards and Macys!! All the conditioning seemed to pay off for us on Saturday as we looked like our old self.

Last Tuesday we faced Early in a huge contest at Armadillo Arena. I’ve been stressing to the girls that HOME games are a must in District so we were ready to defend our turf so to speak. We started off well and had an 11-6 lead early in the second quarter but we had a few lapses on defense and went in at half down 21-16. After a bit of "soul searching" we came out and played with a great deal of desire and intensity in the second half. Early has a really solid club and two of the best guards in this area. We had a 30-27 lead at the end of the third quarter and had a great fourth quarter which propelled us to victory. Nicole Sears had a huge fourth quarter as she hit a three and was fouled and this seemed to give us a huge lift as we brought the victory home. This was a typical San Saba-Early game. A great deal of intensity and scoring is very hard to come by. I’m sure they’ll be "loaded for bear" when we go over there for the second half but what a "sweet" win by our Lady Dillos. Haylee Oliver lead us in scoring with 23 followed by Nicole Sears with 13. Tarah Crosby did a great job hounding the Donahoo kid all night and Nessa and Bianca Zepeda applied great pressure to the Harris and Donahoo kid as well. Haylee had 14 rebounds for us and Johna Reavis lead us in steals with 3. Johna had a great third quarter as she came up with some huge plays out of our 100 jump. These steals really jump started our offense and crowd. Tarah, Nessa, and Johna all had two assists for us as well.

When this article comes out we will have played Comanche. I’m sure this one will have been a grinder because it’s on the road and they’ve really been playing well under coach Mickey Baker. We will play Coleman here this Friday and this will wrap up the first half of District play for us. Several big road games are in store for us in the second half so we would really appreciate a few "road warriors" to help us bring home some wins to the county of San Saba. Phil 4:13.
