December 31, 1959

A total of four car wrecks during the holidays took some of the joy from the Christmas holiday season, with two people in the local hospital from injuries, according to Sheriff Brantley Barker, who investigated the accidents.

A fire destroyed the Bill Stewart home in Lindley Addition on Tuesday night, Dec. 22. It was reported that no one was at home at the time of the fire and the origin of the fire is unknown. The fire department put the fire out but the home was almost consumed before the firemen reached the scene.

The Bernie Hart residence and Ophelia's Gift Shop were judged first place winners in the respective divisions of Christmas decorations, sponsored by the San Saba Garden Club, announced Mrs. Curtis Johnson, president. Second and third place residences were awarded to the Watt Brown home and the J.E. Layland home, respectively. Marie's Shop was second and Ray's Floral third for business.

Tommy Cummings of Locker, is training in Navy boot camp at San Diego, Calif.

December 28, 1940

A total of $12,360 has been paid into the hands of San Saba County trappers so far this season, according to reports from two local concerns buying furs here. This amount was paid for an aggregate of about 18,666 pelts taken.

A severe epidemic of influenza is San Saba forced the postponement for one week of the opening of school after the holidays.

Farris Farley, 12 year-old son of Dr. and Mrs. F.W. Farley, has done it again. He shot a fine 6-point buck Dec. 29, at the W.R. Payne ranch.

Headed by Dr. F.B. Plummer of the University of Texas, a small group of nationally known geologists, some of them accompanied by their wives, stopped overnight at Hotel San Saba Sunday while on a short excursion to points of geological interest in the county and others in Central Texas.

December 29, 1909

C.W. Walters, assignee, has sold the Jack Johnson stock of goods at Bowser to W.P. Gunter at 70 cents on the dollar. Mr. Gunter has bought out Eugene Prather at Harkeyville and will move this Bowser stock of goods to his Harkeyville store.

One half of the querries propounded by the News some time back have been answered. The location of the Santa Fe line thru town and of the depot are now fixed. The line will go on the north side and the depot will be on the open glade north of S.W. Walker's residence.

A.A. Gregg, son of W.H. Gregg of the Rough Creek section, recently came home from Tecumsey, Oklahomea, where he has been attending school for the past two years. His brother, Riley Gregg, is a teacher in the school and is doing fine.

W.M. Perry is in a dejected condition because his "Gray mare is dead". Gray mare was about 17 years old and had raised him about 13 mules, of which he now has about six hundred dollars worth and sold from her some five or six hundred dollars worth. This is a concrete example of the value of a good brood mare.
