The deputies with the San Saba Sheriff's office underwent their first round of medical training this week. All of the deputies became certified in CPR and also learned some basic trauma skills. The Sheriff's office, working with San Saba EMS, now have three AED's assigned to their patrol units. Sheriff Brown stated, "We are already on patrol and we usually arrive on the scene first so we need to be able to react to each emergency as it arises with not only the proper training, but with the proper equipment as well." Adding the AED's to the Sheriff's deputies’ vehicles only increases the emergency care that can be on the scene in record time.
Wymond Kraft, San Saba EMS Coordinator, taught the class and is a paramedic, firefighter, and law enforcement officer and is a good example of the type of cross trained officers who are working and are needed in our area. Sheriff Brown, City of San Saba Police Officers Kevin Barclift and Dwayne Shaw are three more officers who are law enforcement, fire and EMS trained and working in our county.
Sheriff Brown also stated, "I don't expect my deputies to become paramedics, but I will encourage them to get as much training as possible as to make each and every one of them a better asset to our community.”
The deputies will be taking two more levels of training, learning everything from how to assist with things like spiking an IV bag to more advanced trauma such as working on a sucking chest wound with what you have in the field.
Sheriff Brown believes that with this type of training the Sheriff's office hopes to be able to make a difference in those first three to five minutes in an emergency.
