No local post office locations appear on the July 28 list of nearly 700 potential candidates being considered by the Postal Regulatory Commission for closure.

Thirty six post offices located in Texas are included on the list of possible closures, including one each in Dallas, Irving, Lewisville and Arlington; two in Lubbock; four in Austin, El Paso and Houston; eight in Ft. Worth; and 10 in San Antonio.

The General Accounting Office recently added the Postal Service to its list of troubled agencies, citing serious and significant financial challenges facing the agency with a potential $7 billion loss this fiscal year despite a 2 cent increase in the price of stamps in May, cuts in staff and removal of collection boxes.

As people and businesses have switched to email and private carrier services, the Postal Service’s mail volume fell by 9.5 billion pieces to a total of 203 billion pieces last year and is expected to drop by an additional 28 billion pieces this year.

Besides closing some post office locations, the Postal Service is considering other cost saving measures such as switching to five day a week delivery rather than its traditional six day delivery schedule.
