Shopping for clothes is important because we all like to look good. We may have less money to spend on clothes now due to the tighter economy.

Here are 10 tips for saving money on clothing:

1. Determine just how much money you have to spend on clothing; then stay within that amount.

2. Purchase the best quality you can afford. Clothes will look better and wear longer.

3. Select clothes that you can mix and match. A shirt that will go with jeans, pants and capris that you already own.

4. Purchase fall/winter or spring/summer items at the end of the season on sale.

5. Buy well-made garments. They’ll wear and last longer.

6. Buy clothes that you can machine wash and dry. Dry cleaning adds to the cost of clothes.

7. Learn to sew. Start by re-doing simple alterations such as sewing on buttons and hemming pants.

8. Look for online deals. Sign up for e-mail newsletters from retailers for sale notices and coupons.

9. Shop factory outlet stores, consignment stores, and rummage sales for good-quality items.

10. Take care of your clothes. Hang them up and follow the directions on the tags for how to care for them.
