San Saba residents excel in county and regional pecan shows
Thursday, December 25, 2008 • Posted December 25, 2008

The San Saba County Pecan Show exhibited forty six entries this year. Considering the conditions in our area this appears to be a very good show. Many shows in the State were cancelled or only had a handful of entries. Quality was excellent for all the forty six entries.

A special thanks to Jackie Brister, Olan Tisdale, and Dwight Harkey for helping shell the entries. Lucy Wilson was unable to help this year but promises to return to her position next year.

County level results: The Champion Native was grown by Jackie Brister; Mebbie Eckhoff was Reserve Champion, and Imogene Hawkins was third in this division. Marvin Riggs entered the first and second place Lightest Pecan and Cubby Pearce third.

In the Commercial Division, Olan Tisdale’s Hopi was Champion, followed by Randy Baxter’s Cheyenne, Reserve Champion Commercial. The second place Cheyenne was grown by David Leonard followed by Gilbert Flores in third. Don Van Gorp won the Choctaw; Mose Brown the Kanza; Mebbie Eckhoff the Mohawk, and David Leonard the Western. In the Desirable, Marvin Riggs first and Texcan Pecan second. Randy Baxter won the Pawnee variety followed by Texcan Pecan and Olan Tisdale. Randy Baxter also won the Sioux, followed by Mose Brown. Finishing up the Commercial’s, Jackie Brister was first with his Wichita; Mose Brown second, and Olan Tisdale third.

In the Classic Division, Mebbie Eckhoff was Champion with her Comanche. Marvin Riggs exhibited the Reserve Champion with his first place Shoshoni. Debbie Millican was first with her Burkett and first with her San Saba Improved. Olan Tisdale was first with a Barton, Randy Baxter first with his Mahan, and Tony Navarra’s Onliwon was first in the Other Varieties. Will Sloan had the second place Burkett, Bert Holland second San Saba Improved, and Jackie Brister second place Shoshoni.

On the Regional level San Saba had sixteen entries advancing out of County. Fifteen of those entries brought home regional awards! Two Division Champions and thirteen placing pecans, move on to State next summer. The Regional Show enjoyed seventy one entries in this off year.

Jackie Brister continued his winning ways with the Champion Native, as did Olan Tisdale’s Hopi, being named Champion Commercial. Good luck to both these entries on the State level. Other San Saba County winning entries follow: Randy Baxter grew the first place Mahan, the second place Cheyenne, and the second place Pawnee. Marvin Riggs had the first place Lightest Pecan and the second place Desirable. Mose Brown had two second place entries, Kanza and Wichata. Mebbie Eckhoff was the proud winner of a first place award, in the Comanche, as well as the second place Mohawk. Four first place winners were David Leonard, Western; Olan Tisdale, Barton; and Debbie Millican, San Saba Improved and Burkett.

Congratulations to all these growers who contributed to the success of our County Show and made an excellent showing for San Saba County on the next level. Thirty five per cent of our County entries advanced to Regional in Stephenville and made up twenty three per cent of that show. Ninety four percent, all but one,of our County entries placed. We may never accomplish this again! Kudos to the Pecan Capital of the World!
