7th Grade Lady Dillos win Brady Tournament
Thursday, December 11, 2008 • Posted December 11, 2008

The Seventh Lady Dillos have had a difficult time winning games thus this far, but found the formula at the Brady Tounament defeating Sonora and Brady to win the Tounament.

Team members are Candace Saldivar, Mikayla Cisneroz, Brianna Spence, Joely Haverland, Mikayla Eden, Vici Henry, and Nickie Ortiz. Added for the tournament were Allison Nettleship and Morgan Jimenez.

The first game of the year was against a Comanche team which had good overall height and speed. With no scrimmage to start the season, this first outing was one of learning to not panic and playing as a team. The game stayed fairly close, San Saba outscoring Camanche only in the fourth quarter which was not enough as Comanche prevailed 28-22.

The Lady Dillos traveled to Dublin where they had the experience of one official being pulled from the scorers table, a ball hitting the wall which was not called out of bounds and other strange events. Dublin has a young lady who stands over 6 feet tall who made a difference in the game, scoring 14 of their 23 points. The Lady Dillos were down one point at the half, were outscored 5 points in the third quarter, before coming back to outscore Dubin 8-5 in the fourth, falling to Dublin 23-20.

The next trip was to Goldthwaite where the Lady Dillos fell by the score of 13-11. Great defense by the Lady Dillos, but too many turnovers and too many lay-ups missed. Again the Lady Dillos won the fourth quarter by 5-2. What also hurt was only making 1 out of 6 free throws.

For our third straight out of town game, the Ladies traveled to Comanche. The first quarter was a mighty defensive battle with Comanche ahead 3-0. Then a combination of missing many easy shots, losing our composure against the press, and only hitting one of eight free throws led to a 14-1 quarter advantage for Comanche. There was improvement in the second half with the final score being 35-12 for Comanche.

The first game of the tournament came against an easier team. The Lady Dillos played very good defense and hit their shots. The first quarter was the only quarter the Ladies did not score at least ten points, and after leading 23-0 after the first half, enjoyed having an easy second half to win 45-6.

In the finals, San Saba played Brady who had beaten Llano. The Ladies did a great job on defense as the first half score was 9-3 San Saba. Overall, the Ladies did not shoot well, but kept up the defensive pressure. Unfortunately Brady scored on three put backs and two free throws to score as part of 10 points scored in the second half. San Saba outscored Brady in every quarter to pull out a 21-13 win over a district opponent.

Finally after 5 games on foreign courts, the Lady Dillos will play Dublin on the 8th of December at home, and Goldthwaite on the 15th at home.
