Coyotes raid Hornets
Thursday, October 30, 2008 • Posted October 30, 2008

The #4 State ranked Richland Springs Coyotes took the Rochelle Hornets behind the ol' wood shed last Friday night and came out with a 62-0 win. The Coyotes showed total domination on both sides of the ball all night long. The game was called at the half because of the 45 point mercy rule.

Haustin Burkhart got the Coyotes on the board with a quick score from 21 yards out. Randy Couch added the PAT kick. Rochelle was then forced to punt the ball away and the Coyotes only needed one snap to go up 16-0.

Haustin Burkhart found a wide open Randy Couch for a 60 yard TD bomb. Randy Couch added the PAT kick. The Coyotes quick defense forced two straight sacks and on 3rd down the Hornets were having to snap the ball from their own 1 foot line. The Coyote defense was too much as they knocked the Hornet runner down in the end zones for a safety.

After the free kick, the Coyotes only needed 26 seconds to score again. Haustin Burkhart connected up with Nigel Bates for a 11 yard TD. Randy Couch added the PAT kick. The Coyote defense recorded another safety moments before the end of the 1st quarter to give them a 28-0 led.

For the Coyote defense to get two safeties in one quarter was a pretty rare feat. It just don't happen every day.

The Coyotes opened the 2nd quarter with a two play drive that ended in a Haustin Burkhart to Nigal Bates 47 yard touchdown. Randy Couch added the PAT kick. Rochelle fumbled the ball away on the first play after the kickoff and in one play Haustin Burkhart scampered 20 yards for the Coyote TD. Randy Couch added the PAT kick. Andrew Fowler added the next Coyote TD on a 9 yard run and that made the score 50-0.

On Rochelle's next possession, Andrew Fowler was in the act of tackling the Hornet runner, when in the blink of an eye, Andrew had the ball in his arms and returned it 10 yards for the Coyote TD! If their would have been any law enforcement at this game, Andrew would have been arrested after the game for grand theft! Beautiful play, Andrew!

The last 3 and half minutes of the half, the Coyote JV team entered the game and did a great job shutting down the Hornet 1st team offensive. The Coyote JV offensive then marched right down the field and scored with 1:10 left in the half on a 11 yard TD pass from Demin Reeves to Stephen Fowler. The final score was 62-0!

Great job by all! The Coyotes wrapped up a playoff spot with this win and will now look to wrap up the District Championship this Friday night when they travel to Santa Anna on Halloween night.

Santa Anna is 2-6 on the year and 1-2 in district. Their district losses are to Eden and Robert Lee. The Mountaineer offense has been averaging only 24 pp, while their defense has been giving up 54 pp. The Coyote offense has been pumping out 65 pp and the defense as only been allowing 19 pp. Let's keep them stands full, Coyote faithful!

The game will once again be on KBAL 106.1FM or www.kbalfm.com with the pre-game starting at 7pm. My pick: It will be a FRIEGHTFULL night for the Mountaineers! GO COYOTES GO!

Remember to mark your calendars for Nov. 8th. The Coyote Booster Club will host their 2nd Annual Chili Supper/BINGO night. We have already received around $1800 in prizes, with more to come! We have other classes and groups that are adding booths like a cake walk and pony rides daily. Please join us for an evening of fun!
