7th Dillos lose a heartbreaker

The 7th Dillos traveled to Early last Thursday to battle the Longhorns. It was a hard fought game and both sides played their hearts out.

Early won the toss and elected to receive. Oscar Villa handled the kicking duties for the Dillos. Early made a decent return before being brought down by T.J. Hibler and Oscar Villa. Early's first drive consisted of sweep after sweep after sweep. Good defensive plays were made by Geryn Young, Kolton Ellis, Dallas Caldwell, Brian Rogers, Cosme Diaz, and Kelan Verette. Despite the best efforts of the Dillos, Early was able to take a pitch around the left side for a 12 yard TD. The 2 pt. try was no good. 6-0 Early.

A good kick pinned the Dillos deep in their own territory. The Dillos didn't take long to score. Kolton Ellis, Geryn Young, and Jordan Watson made runs of 5 yards. Kelan Verette made runs of 1 and 4 yards before busting out with a 57 yard gain. Verette threw a pass to Dallas Caldwell for a 22 yard TD. Verette punched in the 2 pt. try. 8-6 Dillos.

This drive seemed to reenergize the Dillos. Ruben Aquirre and Kristian McCoury each made tackles for a loss. Kelan Verette and Kolton Ellis made a huge tackle on 3rd down to bring up a 4th and short situation. Kelan Verette came up big with a tackle for a loss on 4th down.

The Dillos took over on downs. It only took 1 play for Verette to score. He busted out a 32 yard touchdown run. This was behind fantastic blocking by Dallas Caldwell, Oscar Villa, Brian Rogers, Wesley Gates, Gunner Hibler, Kristian McCoury, and Ashton Krueger. Verette punched in the 2 pt. try. 16-6 Dillos.

Early took over and had 2 minutes left in the half to try and score. The Dillos were determined to hold them out of the endzone. Ruben Aquirre, Dustin Sloan, Daniel Calderon, and Jordan Watson made key tackles. Kelan Verette picked off a third down pass. 16-6 Dillos at the half.

The Dillos received the ball to start the second half. Early brought pressure and the Dillos weren't able to get anything going. The Dillos were forced to punt. Early didn't take long to capitalize on this failure to score. Two long passes put Early at the 2 yard line. A quick run up the middle gave Early the TD. The 2 pt. try was no good.

The Dillos made a good effort to get down the field. Geryn Young made 2 runs of 5 yards and Verette made runs of 10, 13, and 46 yards. Two 10 yard holding penalties and dropped passes stalled the drive.

Early took over with 4 minutes left on the clock and 82 yards to go. Geryn Young, Brian Rogers, Dallas Caldwell, and Kelan Verette made key tackles to try and stop the Longhorns. But try as they might, the Dillos couldn't stop the final run of 22 yards to give the Longhorns the lead. The 2 pt. try was good. 20-16 Early.

The Dillos got the ball back with 57 seconds left on the clock. Verette made two runs of 10 and 24 yards to put the Dillos at the Early 45 yard line.

Verette threw a pass to Jordan Watson in the endzone, but the pass was picked off by Early. Early took a knee. 20-16 Early wins.

The Dillos travel to Junction this Thursday to take on the Eagles.
