Chief Justice Law to speak at San Saba Property Owners meeting
Thursday, October 23, 2008 • Posted October 23, 2008

Chief Justice Ken Law of the Texas Court of Appeals, Third District, will speak to the San Saba Property Owners Association at its October 28, 2008 Meeting. The Meeting will be held at 7:00 PM in the Senior Center on the corner of S. Water and E. Storey Streets. All citizens and students are invited to attend.

Chief Justice Law presides over the Texas appellate court with civil and criminal jurisdiction for 24 Texas Counties including San Saba. In this capacity, his court hears appeals from San Saba’s State Courts. His Court also has statewide jurisdiction for Administrative Law Appeals from state commission and agency decisions. State agencies enact regulations and issue decisions ranging from construction and operating permits for city waste water systems and quarries to agricultural businesses. Chief Justice Law presides over a six justice court and a staff of over 20 attorneys and clerks.

Chief Justice Law will focus his presentation upon work of The Rock Art Foundation of which he is a past president and active member. The Rock Art Foundation exists to promote conservation and study of Native American Art. For over five millennia, native America’s aboriginal artists recorded elaborate scenes upon the limestone canvas of canyons and rock shelters. The Rock Art Foundation has been a leader in the area of education and preservation of these sites. The Rock Art Foundation offers access to numerous rock art and historic sites through cooperation with various land owners. It is respectful of landowner concerns and supports the rights of private land owners to act as the best stewards for these irreplaceable archaeological treasures. While San Saba possesses a limited number of rock art sites, it does have a rich archaeological heritage. There are numerous sites where Indian artifacts have been discovered and citizens often question what discoveries they must report and protect. And, what are their liabilities if they allow visitors to the sites? Chief Justice Law will answer these questions. San Saba archeology steward, Buddy Whitley, will give an overview of Native American history and sites in San Saba County following Chief Justice Law’s presentation.

The Property Owners Association invites all citizens to attend. Following the meeting there will be a social offering and opportunity to meet Chief Justice Law.
