San Saba County Pecan Show held December 3rd & 4th

The San Saba Pecan Growers held their annual Pecan Show on December 3rd & 4th at the Courthouse. Entries were down this year with a total of 63 samples. Lucy Wilson, Tommy Behrens, Shaun Oliver, and Olan Tisdale were on hand to enjoy the show. John Begnaud, Tom Green County Horticulturist, judged the show on Tuesday morning.

Imogene Hawkins was the proud Champion in the Natives followed by David Gilger for Reserve Champion Native. Otis Judkins was third in that division.

In the Commercial Division, Olan Tisdale’s Hopi was Champion and Jackie Brister’s Oconee Reserve. Other Commercial Division winners were: Cheyenne, Dwight Harkey first, Gilbert Flores second, and Jackie Brister third. Choctaw, Mebbie Eckhoff first, Texcan Pecan second, and Buddy & Betty Oliver third. Desirable, Randy Baxter first place, Fleming Springs second, and Texcan Pecan third. Kiowa, first Mebbie Eckhoff, second Texcan Pecan, and third Lynn Hamrick. Mebbie Eckhoff also had the first place Mohawk. Pawnee, Jackie Brister first, Randy Baxter second, and Gilbert Flores third. Wallace Anthony & Chris Haines exhibited the first place Schley. Sioux, Mose Brown first, Ryan Behrens, our youngest exhibitor at 3 years old was second, and Randy Baxter third.

John & Jean Brooks had the first place Burkett as we move to the Classic Division. Mahan, first C.A. Harkey, second Gilbert Flores, and third Mebbie Eckhoff. Maramec, Dwight Harkey first and Fleming Springs second. Texcan Pecan had the first place Prilop. Stuart, C.A. Harkey first, Wallace Anthony & Chris Haines second. Donald Sloan produced the first place Success. Lady Z was first in Other Varieties with her Onliwon. Variety Seedlings, Texcan Pecan first with a pecan he propagated to be named Texcan we are told. Marvin Riggs was second and Mike McDowell third. The Champion Classic was Texcan Pecan’s Navaho. Mebbie Eckhoff was Reserve Classic with her Comanche.

Twenty three of these entries were selected by Judge John Begnaud to advance to the Regional Pecan Show December 11th & 12th in Stephenville. Thanks to all who made this excellent Pecan Show possible by helping process and bringing their entries. Our County Show continues to be one of the largest and best in the State.
