Local resident bags the "big one" in New Mexico
Thursday, October 9, 2008 • Posted October 9, 2008

On September 29, 2008, Jackie Brister killed a huge "bull of the woods" elk while hunting in New Mexico, near Weed in Lincoln National Forest. Jackie has been hunting elk the last seven years, and this is his biggest elk yet.

Jackie's goal was to get a large 6x6 bull elk to shoulder mount for decoration in his hunting lodge, which is now under construction on his ranch. The elk scored 300 on the Boone and Crockett scale.

Jackie and Charlene were accompanied on this trip by Phillip and Bobbie Morris of Bend, and Carl Adams of Dublin. Charlene and Bobbie took pictures while Jackie watched Phillip and Carl do the butchering with their skilled hands.

A great and memorable time was enjoyed by everyone. Jackie's next goal is to get a matching elk in Colorado at season's opening on October 11th. It and a big black bear would complete the decorations for the Brister's lodge.
