San Saba ISD welcomes new addition to Rogan Field
Thursday, October 2, 2008 • Posted October 2, 2008

Thanks to the efforts of Athletic Director, Joel Johnson and the generous donation of numerous San Saba businesses, the Armadillos opened UIL 8AA district play with an exciting new interactive scoreboard. Not only did the crowd enjoy the Dillos victory against Dublin, they were entertained by the scrolling LED sign that featured messages throughout the game.

In February of 2008, Coach Joel Johnson began his initial quest to get the Armadillos a new scoreboard at Rogan Field. Working with Daktronics Sales Representative, Jim Hess, Coach Johnson reviewed scoreboard designs and options that would be within the financial range of our possible donors as well as compliment the physical setup at Rogan Field. Keeping with the traditional, purple, gold and white, the features of the scoreboard include a wireless control panel, scrolling LED/message center, decorative arch featuring “Rogan Field” placed strategically on the top of the scoreboard and advertising spaces for 9 sponsors. The scoreboard features state of the art wireless capability and at the helm controlling the scoreboard on Friday nights is Jeffery Osbourn and on Thursday is SSISD Band Director, Jason Howard. SSISD superintendent’s secretary, Jackie Dyer controls the LED/message center from a wireless laptop computer in the press box.

The original scoreboard was sponsored by Arrowhead Bank and again the bank jumped on board to be a major sponsor of the new scoreboard. Along with Arrowhead Bank, Harry’s Department Store, Sisters Country Store, San Saba Pecan, Golding Motors, Hamrick’s Automotive, Sonic, Pecan Valley Hardware and Oliver Pecan funded the advertising spots that enabled the scoreboard to be purchased with no financial contribution on behalf of the District. It was the initiative and diligence of Coach Johnson that made this project a success as he sought out and pursued possible donors. The success of the installation would not have happened if it were not for some very key individuals. Assisting with the installation were from SSISD, Kenneth Groomes, Scott Miller, Paul Stewart, the City of San Saba’s Electric Department and Don Isham from Isham Electric. San Saba ISD will honor these individuals and our donors in a ceremony on October 31 which is the Armadillo’s last home game and is parent’s night as well. Come out and see the new scoreboard and support the Armadillos.
