Lila Pearl Walters

Lila Pearl "Pearlie" Walters, age 93, passed away Saturday, September 6, 2008 in Llano Memorial Hospital, Llano, Texas. She was born April 21, 1915 to John Johanson and Maggie Moore Johanson in Bluffton, Texas.

Pearlie moved with her parents to Cherokee, Texas in 1930 from Bluffton. Lila Pearl Johanson and Malcolm S. "Mike" Walters were united in marriage May 22, 1937 in Florence, Texas.

During World War II, Mike and Pearlie lived in Houston where their only son, Byars, was born. The Walters family returned to Cherokee in the mid-1940s and maintained their home there. They were co-owners of Cherokee Grocery for a number of years.

She was a faithful member of the Cherokee Church of Christ and spent many hours as a volunteer for Cherokee Home for Children. She also was a member of the Cherokee Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary.

Mrs. Walters is survived by two brothers: Dale Johanson of Three Rivers, Texas, and Harold Johanson of LaVernia, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, M.S. "Mike" Walters; her son, Byars Walters; her parents, John and Maggie Johanson; and five brothers and three sisters.

Graveside services were held Monday, September 8, 2008 at the Bluffton Cemetery in Llano County. Rev. Charles Johanson of San Antonio and Rev. Doug Suggs of Cherokee conducted the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to: Byars Walters Scholarship at Cherokee ISD; Cherokee Home for Children; or Cherokee Church of Christ.

Arrangements were under the direction of Waldrope-Hatfield-Hawthorne Funeral Home in Llano, Texas.
