The #3 Richland Springs Coyotes improved their record to (3-0) this past Friday night by defeating the Lometa Hornets by a score of 62-14. The game was called at the half due to the 45 point mercy rule.
On the first play from scrimmage, Coyotes’ Haustin Burkhart ripped the ball out of the Lometa runner arms and the tone of the game was set. The Coyotes scored two plays later on a 1 yard TD plunge by Andrew Fowler. Randy Couch added the PAT kick. The Coyote defense was absolutely smothering in the first half. They forced two Hornet punts and recovered one more fumble. Both punts and turnover led to more points for the Coyotes. Haustin Burkhart connected with Abraham Ahumada twice, one from 25 yards out and the other from 45 yards out. Andrew Fowler ended the first quarter scoring on a 10 yard TD run and after a Randy Couch PAT kick, the Coyotes were on cruise control with a 30-0 lead. With the Coyote defense holding the Hornets to a punt and on downs, they made the Hornets pay with their quick strike offense. Haustin Burkhart added a 10 TD run along with a 25 yard TD pass to Randy Couch.
The Hornets finally found the end zones a couple of times in the 2nd quarter. Dalton Parsons and Brandon Faubion each added TD runs for the Hornets. Haustin Burkhart ended his rushing performance with a 15 yard TD scamper, but went to the air one more time before calling it a night. Haustin found a tightly covered Nigel Bates for a 18 yard TD. Nigel Bates leaped about three feet in the air between two defenders and hauled in the final Coyote score! Randy Couch was solid again with his kicking toe. Randy was 7 of 8 on his PAT kicks and was also outstanding in his kicking off. Randy kicked all but two kickoffs out of the back of the end zones and my friend, that’s the best kickoff coverage you can ask for!
The Coyote offense has been running on high octane and looking very swell. The Coyote defense is improving every week and this week the Coyotes has two take-a-ways that resulted in 16 points. Well the Coyotes will now focus on the (3-0) Gordon Longhorns, a much improved team from years past. The series between the Coyotes and Longhorns is tied at 3-3. This will be an early season test for both teams and it will show just where both programs are. This should be the game of the week in Six-Man football with the #3 Coyotes hosting the #6 Longhorns.
The Longhorns will be coming into Coyote Country after whipping up on Newcastle by a score of 80-30. The one common opponent for both the Coyotes and Longhorns was Walnut Springs. The Coyotes defeated them 82-36 and the Longhorns won 76-28. The Coyotes offensive have been averaging 69 ppg, while their defense has only been allowing 17 ppg. The Longhorns offensive has been pumping out 72 ppg and giving up 32 ppg. This game is building up to be a big thing around Six-Man football. The majority of the Six-Man community has been waiting and looking for the right team to come along and knock off the Coyotes, but they just may have to wait another day! There are a couple of problems they haven’t thought about. I know that these Coyotes are focused and are out to prove that they can keep the Coyote winning streak alive.
The other is, our coaches. The Coyote coaching staff work countless hours preparing for each opponent as if it was the State Championship game. They will have our boys prepared for anything that Gordon throws at them. With a slight advantage on paper, playing at home, and just having a deep gut feeling about this team, I didn’t hesitate one second to pick the Coyotes to handle the Longhorns! COYOTES - 69, Gordon 30.
Hope everyone can make the game at Coyote Field, our boys will need you to show your Coyote spirit! Let’s go ahead and break out our air horns, bells, clappers, cans, and what ever else you can find to make noise. If we Coyote Fans can make enough noise to effect our opponents in the big playoff stadiums, we should be able to be so LOUD at Coyote Field that the Longhorns will have a hard time calling and hearing the snap count!! I challenge everyone to bring a legal noise maker and pump up our Coyotes!!
