Thursday, September 18, 2008 • Posted September 18, 2008

San Saba’s First Baptist Church will be presenting a free concert this Sunday featuring Wayne Oquin. Dr. Oquin is a professor at the famed Juilliard School in New York City. His award winning composition titled “A Time to Break Silence” will be the featured presentation. The work is a song cycle that highlights the words and writings of Martin Luther King and will be performed by baritone Sidney Outlaw of the Florida Grand Opera. Mr. Outlaw has sung at the Metropolitan Opera and is considered one of the fine young voices in America today. The concert will also feature Dr. Oquin’s organ work performed by Dr. Allen Reed of Howard Payne University. The piece, “Reverie” was premiered this spring at Carnegie Hall. The Howard Payne University Concert Choir will perform Dr. Oquin’s “Ave Maria.”

The concert will also feature Dr. Oquin playing Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor, “The Pathétique”. The event will be video recorded and produced for presentation in a documentary format about the work and its ties to Dr. King. This is an opportunity to see and hear performers at the highest level of their art. The concert will be in San Saba’s First Baptist Church’s new sanctuary that features state-of-the-art lighting, sound and recording facilities, on September 21st, at 6:00 p.m. For more information you may contact the church office at 325-372-5761.
